American Playgrounds: Revitalizing Community Spaceby: Susan G. Solomon

American Playgrounds: Revitalizing Community Space
by: Susan G. Solomon

Hardcover. Hanover NH, University Press of New England, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright duct jacket, 251 pages, b&w illustrations. For years, designers, educators, and community administrators have clamored for a book that will highlight the problems with contemporary playgrounds, tender sorely needed strategies with which to redress them, and stimulate national debate about today's crisis of undervalued public space. Susan Solomon's groundbreaking and marvelously illustrated American Playgrounds is that book. Since the 1970s, Solomon maintains, American playgrounds have degenerated into irrelevance as cultural artifacts and educational tools. Imbedded in Solomon's text is a frank indictment of American attitudes that are stunted by a heavy-handed emphasis on safety that limits the nature of play and the vitality of places for public assembly. During the past decade an elite few American architects, landscape architects, and sculptors, including Stanley Saitowitz, Walter Hood, and Mary Miss, have pioneered the restoration of aesthetic and developmental values to play areas for young people. Solomon appraises these success stories and proposes fresh and urgent remedies that blend excellent design principles, innovative planning, and affordability-a vision for the future of the playground in America. Supplementing her impeccable command of primary and secondary sources with hundreds of hours of interviews with designers and clients, the author confronts a seriously under-developed topic with powerful and complex arguments rich in social history, law, theories of play and childhood, and urbanism. Readers will be inspired-and equipped-to take up the gauntlet of advocacy for superior American playgrounds. Clean copy.

American Signs: Form and Meaning on Rte. 66 by: Lisa Mahar

American Signs: Form and Meaning on Rte. 66
by: Lisa Mahar

Softcover. NY, Monacelli Press,, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 272 pages, illustrated in color and b&w. The roadside sign has become an American icon: a glowing neon symbol of the golden age of the open road. Yet signs are complex pieces of design, serving not only as physical markers but also as cultural, political, and economic ones. In American Signs, Lisa Mahar traces the evolution of motel signs on Route 66 in a distinctive visual approach that combines text, images, and graphics. American Signs reveals the rich vernacular traditions of motel sign-making in five eras, spanning from the late 1930s through the 1970s. The motel signs of the early 1940s, for instance, reflect vernacular traditions dating back at least a century, while examples from the later years of the decade reveal a culture newly obsessed with themes. America's fascination with newness and technological progress is manifested in 1950s motel signs. Finally, in the 1960s, a turn toward simplicity and the use of new, modular technologies allowed motel signs to address the needs of a mass society and the beginnings of a national, rather than regional, aesthetic for motel signs.

American Splendor and More American Splendor: the Life and Times of Harvey Pekar by: Pekar, Harvey

American Splendor and More American Splendor: the Life and Times of Harvey Pekar
by: Pekar, Harvey

Softcover. New York , Ballantine Books, 1st thus, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 320 pages, b&w art by R. Crumb, Kevin Brown, Gregory Budgett and others. Clean, bright paperback. The classic collection of the comics that inspired the movie "American "Splendor, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival "American Splendor is the world's first literary comic book. Cleveland native Harvey Pekar is a true American original. A V.A. hospital file clerk and comic book writer, Harvey chronicles the ordinary and mundane in stories both funny and touching. His dead-on eye for the frustrations and minutiae of the workaday world mix in a delicate balance with his insight into personal relationships. Pekar has been compared to Dreiser, Dostoevsky, and Lenny Bruce. But he is truly more than all of them--he is himself. "Mr. Pekar has . . . proven that comics can address the ambiguities of daily living, that like the finest fiction, they can hold a mirror up to life."

American Sublime: Landscape Painting in the United States 1820-1880by: Wilton, Andrew; Barringer, Tim

American Sublime: Landscape Painting in the United States 1820-1880
by: Wilton, Andrew; Barringer, Tim

Softcover. Princeton NJ, Princeton University Press, 1st pbk, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 282 pages. 113 color plates, 47 in b&w. The painters who came to be known as the Hudson River School - Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, Frederic Edwin Church, Jasper Cropsey, Sanford Robinson Gifford, and others - found inspiration in our young country's natural wonders and were the first to paint many of its still-wild vistas. As America was settled and the wilderness receded, their successors - most notably Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran - carried their quest for the sublime to the Far West, communicating its breathtaking grandeur in brilliant views of Rocky Mountain peaks, roaring waterfalls, and vast canyons. Within a single generation these artists established the dramatic approach to American landscape painting that is celebrated in this stirringly beautiful book. The freshness of their vision, the intensity of their invention, and the energy of their execution were all born of the urgency these artists sensed in the life of America itself. Clean copy. American Witness: The Art and Life of Robert Frankby: Smith, R. J.

American Witness: The Art and Life of Robert Frank
by: Smith, R. J.

Hardcover. NY, Da Capo Press, 1st, 2017, Hardcover, 352 pages. As well-known as Robert Frank the photographer is, few can say they really know Robert Frank the man. Born and raised in wartime Switzerland, Frank discovered the power and allure of photography at an early age and quickly learned that the art meant significantly more to him than the money, success, or fame. The art was all, and he intended to spend a lifetime pursuing it. American Witness is the first comprehensive look at the life of a man who's as mysterious and evasive as he is prolific and gifted. Leaving his rigid Switzerland for the more fluid United States in 1947, Frank found himself at the red-hot social center of bohemian New York in the '50s and '60s, becoming friends with everyone from Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Peter Orlovsky to photographer Walker Evans, actor Zero Mostel, painter Willem de Kooning, filmmaker Jonas Mekas, Bob Dylan, writer Rudy Wirlitzer, jazz musicians Ornette Coleman and Charles Mingus, and more. Frank roamed the country with his young family, taking roughly 27,000 photographs and collecting 83 of them into what is still his most famous work: The Americans. His was an America nobody had seen before, and if it was harshly criticized upon publication for its portrait of a divided country, the collection gradually grew to be recognized as a transformative American vision.

Among the Celestials: China in Early Photographs by: Bertholet, Ferdinand M.

Among the Celestials: China in Early Photographs
by: Bertholet, Ferdinand M.

Hardcover. New Haven, Mercatorfonds, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. The flourishing of photography as a medium in the mid-19th century coincided with a rise in curiosity about China on the part of the Western world. As the number of foreigners living and traveling in China increased, early photographs of China were taken by and for an international audience. Among the Celestials assembles 250 fascinating images of China in the second half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th, captured by the Western camera lens. The photographs portray the gritty side of the country as well as stunning views of palaces, temples, harbors, and gardens. This juxtaposition of the sordid and the serene provides a multidimensional picture of China's physical and social landscape before Mao Zedong's ascent to power changed the country forever. The photographs, many published here for the first time, are both beautiful and moving, and together offer a new understanding of a social and cultural history associated with a time of significant historical change.

An American Outrage: A Novel of Quillifarkeag, Maine (SIGNED COPY)by: G. K. Wuori

An American Outrage: A Novel of Quillifarkeag, Maine (SIGNED COPY)
by: G. K. Wuori

Chapel Hill NC, Algonquin Books, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Harcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page. This is the story of what happened to Ellen DeLay in Quillifarkeag, Maine. Quilli (to the locals) has a lot in common with the small towns that Stephen King so often writes about: there are strange characters with strange names (to some of us) who have lived in the area all their lives, as did their parents before them and their grandparents before that--you get the idea. The narrator tells us that his daughter is a killer and he wants to get the whole story down. He takes his time about it, but what we know from the get-go is that Ellen DeLay was gunned down by four female officers of the law who pumped two hundred rounds into her body. Ellen had been married to Joe for 25 years, but she left him after he accidentally locked her in the part of his truck where he kept his tools--for four days. Ellen thought that Joe was trying to kill her while Joe thought that Ellen had left him. In any case, this incident prompted Ellen to head for the north woods, where, over the years, she learned to dress hunters' kills and became a respected businesswoman. There were a few, especially kids, who thought she was just a crazy woman in the woods but, for the most part, Ellen was left alone. Over the course of 250 pages, the narrator carefully pieces together the details of what happened one afternoon at St. Antoine du Plupart and, just as importantly, what happened afterwards. Being from Maine, the narrator takes his time. He has other things to do and other stories to tell, but in the end every detail about what is truly an American outrage is told. G.K. Wuori is the author of Nude in Tub and has a wonderful gift for language and a heartfelt affection for the place about which he writes.

While some of these lithographs appeared as illustrations in contemporary periodicals , and others were graphic versions of drawings and paintings he had previously made, the majority stood as independent works. Their subjects and styles span the breadth of Bellows's artistic vision. Light sticker residue to front cover, otherwise clean.

An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories: Volume 2
by: Brunetti, Ivan

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 400 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. The book presents contemporary art comics produced by 75 artists, along with some classic comic strips and other related fine art and historical materials. Brunetti arranges the book to reflect the creative process itself, connecting stories and art to each other in surprising ways: nonlinear, elliptical, sometimes whimsical, even poetic. He emphasizes continuity from piece to piece, weaving themes and motifs throughout the volume. As gorgeously produced as Brunetti's previous anthology of graphic fiction, this book does full justice to the creative work of Art Spiegelman, Chris Ware, Charles Burns, Gary Panter, and the other prominent or emerging comic artists who are currently at work at the cutting edge of their medium.

This book offers a selection of his sketches, drawings, paintings, and photographs from that time, and presents one artist's view of the war from North Africa, through the campaigns in Italy, France, and Germany. After the war, the author spent two weeks with the Russians in Berlin, and was then assigned as the courtroom artist during the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials. Along the way are Ed's reminiscences about such personalities as famed war correspondent and artist Bill Mauldin, singers Josephine Baker and Edith Piaf, Charles de Gaulle, Gen. Teddy Roosevelt Jr., and many others. Ed also reminisces about his two years photographing backstage at the Folies Bergere in Paris, as well as his time as an Olympic fencer. Clean copy.

An Eames Primerby: Eames Demetrios

An Eames Primer
by: Eames Demetrios

Softcover. NY, Universe Publishing, 2nd pr., 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 272 pages illustrated in color and b&w. The first book to capture the philosophy and spirit behind the work of Charles and Ray Eames, An Eames Primer offers an in-depth look at the couple's prolific legacy--one that has placed them among the most important American designers of the twentieth century. Those who know one or two aspects of the Eameses' work are often surprised to learn just how far and vast their range extended. Yet throughout their myriad works, from architecture and furniture to exhibition and design and filmmaking, their core philosphy prevails. An Eames Primer is the first book to illuminate this seamless connection. Author Eames Demetrios explores the rich energy of the Eameses' world from a unique perspective, informed by his close relationship with Charles and Ray. He shares personal anecdotes, previously unpublished photos, and his extensive interviews with former friends and colleagues of the Eameses to make connections between the Eameses' influential philosophy and their widely admired work. For those unacquainted with the designers, the stories behind the design process will inform, entertain, and inspire, while readers with an extensive knowledge of the Eameses' work gain a deeper level of understanding their process.

An Empire of Facts: Colonial Power, Cultural Knowledge, and Islam in Algeria, 1870??"1914
by: Trumbull IV, George R.

Softcover. NY, Cambridge University Press, 1st pbk, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 309 pages. An Empire of Facts presents a fascinating account of the formation of French conceptions of Islam in France's largest and most important colony. During the period from 1870 to 1914, travelers, bureaucrats, scholars, and writers formed influential and long-lasting misconceptions about Islam that determined the imperial cultural politics of Algeria and its interactions with republican France. Narratives of Islamic mysticism, rituals, gender relations, and sensational crimes brought unfamiliar cultural forms and practices to popular attention in France, but also constructed Algerian Muslims as objects for colonial intervention. Personal lives and interactions between Algerian and French men and women inflected these texts, determining their style, content, and consequences. Drawing on sources in Arabic and French, this book places such personal moments at the heart of the production of colonial knowledge, emphasizing the indeterminacy of ethnography, and its political context in the unfolding of France's empire and its relations with Muslim North Africa. An Officer and a Lady: The World War II Letters of Lt. Col. Betty Bandel, Women's Army Corps by: Sylvia J. Bugbee (Ed.)

An Officer and a Lady: The World War II Letters of Lt. Col. Betty Bandel, Women's Army Corps
by: Sylvia J. Bugbee (Ed.)

Softcover. Hanover NH, University Press of New England, 1st, 2004, Softcover, 222 pages. From 1942 to 1945, Lieutenant Colonel Betty Bandel (retired) served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC, later WAC, the Women's Army Corps), eventually heading the WAC Division of the Army Air Force. During these years she wrote hundreds of letters to family and friends tracing her growth from an enthusiastic recruit, agog in the presence of public figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt (code named Rover), to a seasoned officer and leader. Bandel was one of the Corps' most influential senior officers. Her letters are rich with detail about the WAC's contribution to the war effort and the inner workings of the first large, non-nurse contingent of American military women. In addition, her letters offer a revealing look at the wartime emergence of professional women. Perhaps for the first time, women oversaw and directed hundreds of thousands of personnel, acquired professional and personal experiences, and built networks that would guide and influence them well past their war years.

Anais Nin: A Sea of Liesby: Bischoff, Leonie

Anais Nin: A Sea of Lies
by: Bischoff, Leonie

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards. 184 pages in color. Anais Nin, the author of works such as Delta of Venus and House of Incest, is the patron saint of taboo-breaking pop culture sexual iconoclasts. Not only is she an inspiration for contemporary figures such as Madonna, but her oeuvre, which encompasses erotica, autobiography, essays, short fiction, novels, and much more, has been adapted into film (Henry and June), television (Little Birds), and other media. The cartoonist Leonie Bischoff traces the life of the prolific writer in this lushly colored graphic novel. It begins with Nin struggling to reconcile the man she married (who had artistic aspirations) with the banker she finds herself living with in the Parisian suburbs. Soon, her obsession with June Miller leads to inspiration. Nin's life and art, the truth and fiction, are further intertwined as she recounts her many sexual liaisons including those with Henry Miller (whom she and her husband subsidize so he can write the controversial Tropic of Cancer), her psychoanalysts, and even her father. Although Bischoff's drawing is largely representational, she occasionally depicts Nin's sexual experiences in scenes as surreal as Nin's own written portrayal of them.
