Fire & Ice: Treasures from the Photographic Collection of Frederic Church at Olana
by: Fels, Thomas

Hardcover. New York, Dahesh Museum of Art, July 2002, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: Near Fine, Hardcover in a dust jacket. Never opened, still in original shrink wrap. Spotless copy. Frederic Church (1826-1900), who gained international renown for paintings such as Niagara (1857), Heart of the Andes (1859), Twilight in the Wilderness (1860), and The Icebergs (1861), was inspired by his extensive travel and study. His work was also informed by his appreciation of a new visual medium. Fire & Ice, a selection from the several thousand photographs and daguerreotypes Church collected at Olana, his Orientalist home on the Hudson River, provides insight into the interests and taste of one of nineteenth-century America's greatest painters.

Fire Lookouts: The Early Years by: Kemnow, La Vaughn Vanderburg

Fire Lookouts: The Early Years
by: Kemnow, La Vaughn Vanderburg

Softcover. MountAinsWest Publishing, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, green pictorial wraps, 193 pages with b&w photos. The early years in the development of the fire lookout system were fraught with difficult decisions, hard work, and danger. Roads and trails had to be built, materials had to be transported. Building materials and supplies were carried up steep, treacherous mountainsides on the backs of horses, mules, and men. Primitive conditions were met with courage, grit, and determination. The people who built, and the people who staffed these lookouts were often exposed to extremes in weather: heat, blizzards, wind, and lightning. Occasional accidents and illnesses were to be expected and sometimes had tragic consequences. The earliest lookouts consisted of the top of a tree; an alidade mounted on a crude support or on a tripod; or simply a mountain top where an observer scanned the surrounding countryside with a powerful field glass, always on the alert for the slighted wisp of smoke. The historical information in this volume is the culmination of many years of research of original documents by Ron Kemnow. Also included are many historical photographs. Some of the older photographs and picture postcards are of poor quality, but were included for their historical value. This book is not in narrative form, but is a collection of official reports, letters, and news articles, presented as they were originally written.

FIREBOAT: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey (SIGNED COPY)by: Kalman, Maira

FIREBOAT: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey (SIGNED COPY)
by: Kalman, Maira

Hardcover. New York , G. P. Putnam and Sons, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Color illustrations by Kalman and SIGNED BY KALMAN. This is the inspiring true story of the John J. Harvey--a retired New York City fireboat reinstated on September 11, 2001. Originally launched in 1931, the Harvey was the most powerful fireboat of her time. After the September 11 attacks, with fire hydrants at Ground Zero inoperable and the Hudson River's water supply critical to fighting the blaze, the fire department called on the Harvey for help. There were adjustments--forcing water into hoses by jamming soda bottles and wood into nozzles with a sledgehammer--and then the fireboat's volunteer crew pumped much-needed water to the disaster site. The John J. Harvey proved she was still one of New York's Bravest! Maira Kalman brings a New York City icon to life, celebrating the energy, vitality and hope of a place and its people.

Softcover. Poster Auctions International, 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 148 pages. In this revealing book with 206 full-color posterswe are presented with women stepping out of the confining traditional roles which they were cast and exercising their new-found liberation. We see them taking to the roads on bicycles, getting behind the wheel of automobiles, hoisting an aperatif, attending a ball unescorted and we are provided with glimpses into women's burgeoning, nascent sexual freedom. This volume features all the top artists of the period: Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Grasset, Chret, Mucha, De Feure, Cappiello, Steinlen, Grn, Pal, Bradley, Penfield and others. First Time I Saw Paris, The : Photographs and Memories from the City of Light (SIGNED COPY)
by: Miller, Peter

Hardcover. New York, Crown, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover, 132 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on title page. Previous owner's bookplate on front end paper, light shelf-wear and rubbing to dust jacket. Clean, tight copy. As a serviceman in Paris after World War II, Peter Miller served as a US Army Signal Corps photographer. By day, he would snap one-star generals greeting four-star generals, and the innumerable grip and grins of Congressmen visiting soldiers. By night, Miller traversed the city of light, capturing the resilient spirit of Parisians in the wake of the devastating war. Miller's photographs reflect the vision of a sparkling city while his recollections document the wonder and enchantment felt by a young man from Vermont. From pictures of the Latin Quarter brimming with American jazz and blues to alluring models on the runways of Christian Dior; from romantic courtships in the streets to hobos along the River Seine, Miller captures these sights and impressions in dynamic compositions and sensitive recollections that are striking, compassionate, and a joy to all lovers of the city of light.

by: Lorissa Rinehart

Hardcover. NY, St. Martin's Press, 1st, 2023, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 381 pages. From the beginning of World War II through the early days of Vietnam, groundbreaking female photojournalist and war correspondent Dickey Chapelle chased dangerous assignments her male colleagues wouldn't touch, pioneering a radical style of reporting that focused on the humanity of the oppressed. She documented conditions across Eastern Europe in the wake of the Second World War. She marched down the Ho Chi Minh Trail with the South Vietnamese Army and across the Sierra Maestra Mountains with Castro. She was the first reporter accredited with the Algerian National Liberation Front, and survived torture in a communist Hungarian prison. She dove out of planes, faked her own kidnapping, and endured the mockery of male associates, before ultimately dying on assignment in Vietnam with the Marines in 1965, the first American female journalist killed while covering combat. Small remainder dot on bottom edge otherwise clean.

Fitzgerald: Geography of a Revolution by: Bunge, William, Foreword: Heynen, Nik, Foreword: Barnes, Trevor

Fitzgerald: Geography of a Revolution
by: Bunge, William, Foreword: Heynen, Nik, Foreword: Barnes, Trevor

Hardcover. Cambridge MA, Schenkman Publishing Company, 1st, 1971, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, oblong format, black cloth with white lettering on spine. 247 pages, b&w photographic illustrations, color folding map tipped-in at front pastedown, rear pictorial endpaper. This on-the-ground study of one square mile in Detroit was written in collaboration with neighborhood residents, many of whom were involved with the famous Detroit Geographical Expedition and Institute. This work, at its core, is dedicated to understanding global phenomena through the intensive study of a small, local place. Beginning with an 1816 encounter between the Ojibwa population and the neighborhood's first surveyor, William Bunge examines the racialized imposition of local landscapes over the course of European American settlement. By 1967 the neighborhood was mostly African American; Black Power was ascendant; and Detroit would experience a major riot. Immersed in the daily life of the area, Bunge encouraged residents to tell their stories and to think about local politics in spatial terms. His desire to undertake a different sort of geography led him to create a work that was nothing like a typical work of social science. The jumble of text, maps, and images makes it a particularly urgent book and a major theoretical contribution to urban geography that is also a startling evocation of street-level Detroit during a turbulent era. Clean copy, no dust jacket.

Flash Gordon Dailies: Austin Briggs: Radium Mines Of Electraby: Moore/Austin Briggs, Don

Flash Gordon Dailies: Austin Briggs: Radium Mines Of Electra
by: Moore/Austin Briggs, Don

Hardcover. Titan, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dustjacket. B&w strips throughout, 276 pages. Once again, Flash Gordon battles the forces of repression and evil on the planet Mongo - only this time it's on a daily basis! In 1940, top illustrator Austin Briggs began the first Flash Gordon daily strip, running as a counterpoint to Alex Raymond's classic Sunday page. In this first of a two volume set, Flash, Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov are caught in a web of spies, political groups, alien tribes and freedom fighters as they struggle against the despotic ruler of Mongo, Ming the Merciless. Briggs' Flash Gordon art and story compare favorably to Raymond's acclaimed work on Sunday. For action and adventure, it's Flash Gordon - every day of the week! (September 8, 1908 - October 10, 1973) he began providing illustrations for the classic pulp magazine Blue Book before becoming an assistant to the legendary Alex Raymond on Flash Gordon. In 1940 he took over the daily Flash Gordon strip from Alex and stayed on it until 1944. He was a profile illustrator and created illustrations for books and magazines such as Readers Digest and The Saturday Evening Post. He was one of the founding faculty for the Famous Artists School.

Flemish Painting, from the 16th to the 18th Century: Relaying Ideas from Erasmus to Diderot
by: Voldere. Florence De & Maxime Hennequet (Contributor) & Daphne Dorel (

Hardcover. Turin, Umberto Allemandi & Co., Revised Ed., 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 320 pages, Illustrated throughout in color. Real 'honest men', the Brueghels took part in the intellectual epic of their day which, from humanism to the spirit of the Enlightenment, brought about a renewal in thought and laid the foundations of Modernity. Through the human adventure of the Brueghel dynasty, progressing from obscure beginnings to recognition by the very greatest, Florence de Voldere introduces us to the genius of these men who created the Flemish aesthetic identity. Voldere takes us through the Renaissance in Flanders in the form of a story in pictures. Through this approach based on a dynamic reading of the paintings, this book shows the crucial role of art at one moment of civilization, and opens up some decidedly novel perspectives for interpreting Flemish art. Clean, like new. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Flesh and Bones: A Jake Lassiter Novel (SIGNED COPY)
by: Paul Levine

Hardcover. NY, William Morrow , 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. INSCRIBED BY LEVINE on the half-title page. Pro football player turned lawyer Jake Lassiter is savoring a drink at a South Beach bar when a beautiful young woman shoots the man on the next bar stool and faints in Lassiter's arms. It's one way to get clients, he figures. The woman, Chrissy Bernhardt, is charged with the first-degree murder of her father, whom Chrissy believes abused her as a child. Lassiter takes the case, which is complicated by the fact that Chrissy's repressed memories of her father's abuse have been "unlocked" with the help of a therapist who turns out to be her late mother's former lover. The seventh Lassiter novel continues the series' steady improvement. Lassiter is smart, tough, funny, and very human. He's coming on fast as one of the most entertaining series characters in contemporary crime fiction. Clean copy.

Fletch and the Widow Bradley
by: Gregory Mcdonald

Softcover. Ashland OR, Blackstone Publishing, reprint, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, pictorial wraps. Young Fletch is less than pleased to be writing a business story, something that's well outside his field of expertise. Eager to get back out on the streets, he quickly compiles what he thinks is a well-executed article, complete with quotes from the chairman of the board's recent memos. But when he fails to do his due diligence when researching the company and its associates, he finds himself in hot water ... and now out of a job. The chairman has been dead for over a year. Realizing his mistake, he visits the widow Bradley to make amends -- and to ask a few simple questions. But her strange demeanor and puzzling answers leave Fletch perplexed. He can't help but wonder: Why would a dead man still be writing memos to his associates? Is he even dead? With his interest now thoroughly piqued, fueled by his desire to get the real story and take back his job, Fletch puts his reporting skills to work as he dives into the mystery surrounding the Bradleys' past.
