William Albert Allard: Five Decades
by: Allard, William Albert

Hardcover. US, Focal Point, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 303 pages, illustrated throughout in color. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. Nearly 50 years of photography by seasoned National Geographic photographer Bill Allard. Allard was a pioneer of color photography with a style that called for entering people's homes and hearts; by winning their confidence he was able to capture "off guard" moments, and reveal the depth of human nature as never before seen in the pages of National Geographic. Always in search of "what is happening at the edges," his work reveals beauty, mystery, and a sense of adventure. Part photography retrospective and part personal memoir, this book paints a full picture -through images and narrative -of the life of a globe-trekking photographer over the past half century.

William Beckmanby: Belz, Carl

William Beckman
by: Belz, Carl

Softcover. Seattle WA, Frye Art Museum, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 108 pages in color. Catalogue of an exhibition held at Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA, 2002. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** A major exhibition devoted to the American painter William Beckman, one of the leading exponents of the Realist "school." A figurative artist, he leans heavily upon classical tradition. The nude portraits can be sometimes jarring. Less well-known are his scenes of rural America, with farms and silos. *** "William Beckman (b. 1942) paints himself, loved ones, and the land he has lived upon, creating edgy portraits and landscapes. His subjects, whether mother or lover, are delivered to the viewer with gripping details, without embelishment. He creates his figurative art using a unique method. He applies paint, then shaves of layer after layer from the surface with a razor, repainting and polishing the canvas to create lustrous, absorbing images. His realism is stripped of sentiment, his idealized portraits scrupulously rendered, and his expansive tracts of Minnesota farmland theatrically scaled. Each painting is epic in significance and matter-of-fact at the same ime. This is the first book that offers a comprehensive view of Beckman's art and career.

by: Knape, Gunilla

Hardcover. Goteborg SW, Scalo/Hasselblad Center, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 126 pages with 112 color plates by Eggleston. Includes an interview with the photographer. Black cloth with a color plate pasted on cover, gilt lettering. No dust jacket issued. Even before he was thrust into the spotlight in 1976 when he garnered a one-person show at New York's Museum of Modern Art, Eggelston was hailed as one of the pioneers of color art photography. This survey, published on the occasion of his winning the prestigious Hasselblad Award, will confirm his reputation among admirers and win new converts to his deceptively straightforward photographs of the everyday. The book brings together 112 pictures made between 1967 and 1996 with an interview, a couple of short essays, and biographical and bibliographical appendixes. The subject matter here is almost exclusively his trademark images of the people, townscapes, and found still lifes of Memphis, TN, and northern Mississippi. The book's modest size (9.5" x 9.5"), simple presentation (small-format images are centered amid plenty of white space), and beautiful printing on matt paper appropriately evoke equal parts family album and gallery wall.

William Harvey: A Life in Circulation
by: Thomas Wright

Hardcover. NY, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. In 1628, the English physician William Harvey published his revolutionary theory of blood circulation. Offering a radical conception of the workings of the human body and the function of the heart, Harvey's theory overthrew centuries of anatomical and physiological orthodoxy and had profound consequences for the history of science. It also had an enormous impact on culture more generally, influencing economists, poets and political thinkers, for whom the theory triumphed not as empirical fact but as a remarkable philosophical idea. In the first major biographical study of Harvey in 50 years, Thomas Wright charts the meteoric rise of a yeoman's son to the elevated position of King Charles I's physician, taking the reader from farmlands of Kent to England's royal palaces, and paints a vivid portrait of an extraordinary mind formed at a fertile time in England's intellectual history. William Merritt Chase: Landscapes in Oil
by: Ronald G. Pisano

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Admired for finding beauty in everyday surroundings, William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) brought an autobiographical element to his work, earning him a unique place in late-19th-century American art history. This book, the third of four volumes to document the complete works of Chase, traces his career as a landscape painter. Following Chase's training in Munich in the 1870s and his many trips to Spain in the early 1880s, his works became light filled and colorful. These paintings anticipate Chase's well-known park scenes of the 1880s painted in Brooklyn and New York and his 1890s works depicting the hills and shoreline adjacent to his home in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island, now recognized as being among the most important examples of American Impressionism. This book presents all of his known landscapes painted in oil, which include many of his best-loved works, in beautiful reproduction, accompanied by the most current and thorough documentation on them.

William Wegman: Funney/Strange
by: William Wegman and Joan Simon

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 304 pages. A comprehensive and intriguing look at the witty and sophisticated art of William Wegman, beloved by the general public and held in critical esteem within the international art world This fascinating book reveals the full range of William Wegman's art. Beloved by the general public for signature photographs of his troupe of Weimaraners, Wegman is also an immensely important figure in the contemporary art world. A pioneer video-maker, conceptualist, performer, photographer, painter, draftsman, and writer, Wegman moves fluidly among various media: from conceptual works to commissioned magazine shots; from videos shown in museums to television segments made for Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live; from artist's books parodying nineteenth-century naturalist studies to children's books revealing tongue-in-cheek portraits of town and country life. William Wegman: Funney--Strange is illustrated with some 250 images. It is the first retrospective volume to consider the artist's entire career from the 1960s to the 2000s and is an essential book for any fan of Wegman's work.

Willie & Joe: The WWII Years (2 Volume Set)by: Bill Mauldin and Todd DePastino

Willie & Joe: The WWII Years (2 Volume Set)
by: Bill Mauldin and Todd DePastino

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Two hardcovers, 650 pages. The complete WWII cartoons of the greatest cartoonist of the Greatest Generation, in a beautiful, oversized, two-volume slipcased set. During WWII, the closest most Americans ever came to the war was through the cartoons of Bill Mauldin, the most beloved enlisted man in the U.S. Army. Fantagraphics Books brings together Mauldin's complete works from 1940 through the end of the war. This collection of over 600 cartoons, most never before reprinted, is more than the record of a great artist: it is an essential chronicle of America's citizen-soldiers from peace through war to victory. Bill Mauldin knew war because he was in it. He had created his characters, Willie and Joe, at age 18, before Pearl Harbor, while training with the 45th Infantry Division and cartooning part-time for the camp newspaper. His brilliant send-ups of officers were pure infantry, and the men loved it. With their heavy brush lines, detailed battlescapes, and pidgin of army slang and slum dialect, Mauldin's cartoons and captions recreated on paper the fully realized world of the American combat soldier. Their dark, often insubordinate humor sparked controversy among army brass and incensed General George S. Patton, Jr. DUE TO WEIGHT, DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.
