Palaces of Goa - Models and Types of Indo-Portugese Civil Architectureby: Carita, Helder

Palaces of Goa - Models and Types of Indo-Portugese Civil Architecture
by: Carita, Helder

Hardcover. London, Cartago, 1st UK, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 224 pages. Color and black & white photography by Nicholas Sapieha. By studying a period of nearly four centuries and examining houses over the entire region of Goa, this lavishly illustrated book, with architectural drawings, attempts to define the specific identity of Indo-Portuguese architecture. It is possible to observe, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries, a progressive cross-influencing of Indian and Portuguese aesthetic tastes: the resulting mixture has produced a fascinating style of architecture, which this text has captured with more than 200 color photographs.

Papers on Time and Tense by: Arthur N. Prior

Papers on Time and Tense
by: Arthur N. Prior

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press , 1st, 1968, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover, blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine, in a lightly worn rose-color dust jacket with fading to spine, 166 pages. Arthur Prior (1914-1969) undertook pioneering work in intensional logic at a time when modality and intensional concepts in general were under attack. He invented tense logic and was principal theoretician of the movement to apply modal syntax to the formalization of a wide variety of phenomena. Prior and Carew Meredith devised a version of the possible worlds semantics several years before Saul Kripke published his first paper on the topic. An iconoclast and a resourceful innovator, Prior inspired many to undertake work in intensional logic. It was the extra-symbolic world that mattered to Prior, not the formal results per se. Prior was the founding father of logic in New Zealand and also a driving force behind the renaissance in British logic from 1956. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

This is a revised and expanded edition of a seminal work in the logic and philosophy of time, originally published in 1968. Arthur N. Several important papers have been added to the original selection, as well as a comprehensive bibliography of Prior's work and an illuminating interview with his widow, Mary Prior. In addition, the Polish logic which made Prior's writings difficult for many readers has been replaced by standard logical notation. This new edition will secure the classic status of the book. Paris Revisited
by: Henri Cartier-Bresson

Hardcover. NY, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2021, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 256 pages. Henri Cartier-Bresson was 'the eye of the 20th century' and one of the world's most acclaimed photographers. Paris was his home, on and off, for most of his life (1908-2004). The photographs he took of the city and its people manage to be both dreamlike and free of affectation. Here are around 160 photographs taken over a more than fifty-year career. Mostly in black and white, this selection reveals the strong influence on Cartier-Bresson of pioneering documentary photographer Eugene Atget (1857-1927), and the clear visual links with Surrealism that infused Cartier-Bresson's early pictures. After an apprenticeship with Cubist painter Andre Lhote, in 1932 Cartier-Bresson bought his first Leica, a small portable camera that allowed him to capture movement and the rhythms of daily life in Paris. Cartier-Bresson observed from close quarters the Liberation in August 1944 and the civil disturbances of May 1968. In between he also succeeded in capturing the faces of Parisians in their natural habitat, celebrated artists and writers and citizens alike. Remainder line to bottom edge, otherwise clean. Paris sens dessus-dessous (Marville photographies 1852-1870)by: Mellot, Philippe

Paris sens dessus-dessous (Marville photographies 1852-1870)
by: Mellot, Philippe

Hardcover. Paris, Editions de Lodi, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, glossy boards in a matching bright dust jacket. Large format, 484 pages, FRENCH TEXT. A collection of over 500 historical photos of old Paris printed in sepia tone. Around 1832 Parisian-born Charles-Francois Bossu (1813-1879) shed his unfortunate last name (bossu means hunchback in French) and adopted the pseudonym Marville. After achieving moderate success as an illustrator of books and magazines, Marville shifted course in 1850 and took up photography, a medium that had been introduced 11 years earlier. His poetic urban views, detailed architectural studies, and picturesque landscapes quickly garnered praise.By the end of the 1850s, Marville had established a reputation as an accomplished and versatile photographer. From 1862, as official photographer for the city of Paris, he documented aspects of the radical modernization program that had been launched by Emperor Napoleon III and his chief urban planner, Baron Georges-Eugene Haussmann. In this capacity, Marville photographed the city's oldest quarters, and especially the narrow, winding streets slated for demolition. Even as he recorded the disappearance of Old Paris, Marville turned his camera on the new city that had begun to emerge. Many of his photographs celebrate its glamour and comforts, while other views of the city's desolate outskirts attest to the unsettling social and physical changes wrought by rapid modernization. Taken as a whole, Marville's photographs of Paris stand as one of the earliest and most powerful explorations of urban transformation on a grand scale. Clean, bright copy.

by: Gilles Perrault

Hardcover. NY, Vendome Press, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 208 pages. Best-selling French author Perrault provides moving personal reminiscences of his childhood in occupied Paris. The brief but eloquent narrative is accompanied by hundreds of previously unpublished photos from French and German archives, collected and cataloged by Parisian art historian Azema. As artists, the authors place special emphasis on the arts under the occupation and document the heroism of the writers' resistance. In sum, they show how Paris "kept alive a sense of the enemy."

Paris: Photographs from a Time That Was
by: David Travis

Hardcover. Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 100 pages. No dust jacket issued. Eugene Atget, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Andre Kertesz, Brassai, Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Doisneau? -some of the greatest photographers of Paris? were relatively unknown when they began their most innovative work. Not yet burdened with conventional career expectations, they found the city the perfect environment in which to invent and develop an entirely new approach to conceiving the photographic image. In the 1920s and 1930s, the generation of photographers after Atget responded not only to the physical city itself but also to a new sensibility of time as a spontaneous act. Masterworks by these now-famous visionaries of the medium are featured in this elegant book of photographs of Paris from the 1850s to the 1950s, drawn from the remarkable collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Park Life: The Summer of 1977 at Comiskey Park
by: Elliott, Peter

Hardcover. Chicago, Paper Mirror Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, large format, 117 pages. B&w photos by Elliott. Images from another age in baseball history. Chicago photojournalist Peter Elliott brings to life the rhythms and character of this revered stadium during 1977, one of its most celebrated seasons. Elliott's recent discovery of negatives lost for 23 years proudly displays the earthy, forgotten life of old-time Chicago baseball before the advent of corporate sky-boxes and gourmet hot dogs. His refined style demonstrates both the lush eye of youthful talent and the singular drive that brought him back to Comiskey Park over and over again during that strange and captivating time known as "the summer of the Chicago Hit Men." The old park never looked so good. And its reappearance through the artistry of Peter Elliott permits it to live again in the hearts of life-long fans and everyone who loves baseball. An engaging narrative accompanies the photographs and catalogues the history and foibles of park, team, and fans.

The book is a powerful reminder of how lucky we are to have Roz Chast among us to tackle some of the toughest themes of the times with uproarious humor: genetically altered mice, birthday parties from hell, and comfort drinks in the age of insecurity.

Passing the Three Gates: Interviews with Charles Johnsonby: McWilliams, Jim [Editor]

Passing the Three Gates: Interviews with Charles Johnson
by: McWilliams, Jim [Editor]

Softcover. University of Washington Press, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 335 pages. "Known for his blending of philosophy, spirituality, humor, and a rollicking good story, Charles Johnson is one of the most important novelists writing today. From his magical first novel, Faith and the Good Thing, to his decidedly philosophical Oxherding Tale; from his swashbuckling indictment of the slave trade in the National Book Award-winning Middle Passage, to his more recent imaginative treatment of Martin Luther King Jr. in Dreamer, Johnson has continually surprised, instructed, and entertained his many avid readers. As this collection of interviews suggests, the novelist is as multifaceted and complex as his novels. Trained in cartooning and philosophy, martial arts and meditation, and producing teleplays, photobiographies, and literary criticism in addition to fiction, Charles Johnson represents a model of what he calls "life as art." Passing the Time in Ballymenoneby: Henry Glassie

Passing the Time in Ballymenone
by: Henry Glassie

Softcover. Bloomington IN, Indiana University Press, reprint, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in pictorial wrappers, 852 pages. The life and art, the folklore, history, and common work of a rural community in Northern Ireland-through the eyes and pen of gifted folklorist Henry Glassie. Glassie regards the people of Ballymenone with respect and affection, allowing them to describe their ideas, life-ways, and values on their own terms, not his. Recognizing that theirs is a mindset and lifestyle that must be seen as an integrated whole, Glassie studies everything about Ballymenone from traditional songs to entertainment to religious beliefs to architecture, liberally quoting from the people who welcomed him into their homes over his extended stays. Some of his insights are pure brilliance, such as recognizing the way the poets and storytellers of a rural Irish district have adapted ancient Gaelic metrics to the English they use today. You will learn more about Ireland and its people in this one book than in a host of others. Clean copy.

Passionella and Other Stories (Feiffer: The Collected Works) (Vol 4)by: Feiffer, Jules

Passionella and Other Stories (Feiffer: The Collected Works) (Vol 4)
by: Feiffer, Jules

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics, reprint, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 180 pages. After 14 years, Fantagraphics' Feiffer resumes with late-fifties and early-sixties popular-magazine stories emphasizing social satire. "Passionella" is Cinderella gone Hollywood: a chimney sweep is transformed into a sexpot. Other stories depict a despondent neurotic who solves romantic problems by inventing a compliant robot, a self-absorbed man who has the entire moon to himself, and the world's greatest athlete, scorned for shunning competition--all done in Feiffer's sketchy, economical cartoon style. An illustrated fable about a village jester searching for his serious side and several one-act plays fill out the volume. In these trenchant pieces, the era's anxieties--conformity, male insecurity, troubled relationships--don't seem a half century old.

by: Robert B. Parker

Softcover. London, Hard Case Crime, 1st thus, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, colorful wraps with a retro-style illustration by Gregory Manchess. Decades before Robert Brown Parker began writing his books about Spenser, a man named Robert Bogardus Parker (1905-1955) penned this extraordinary novel of post-war intrigue. From the corridors and compartments of the Orient Express to the shadowy, ruined streets of Budapest--which he saw firsthand as a foreign correspondent during World War II--Parker takes you on a nightmare tour of a land where life is cheap, old hatreds run strong, and a couple of Americans can find themselves in more danger than they ever imagined. With all the immediacy of the wartime dispatches Parker filed from Turkey, Danzig, Warsaw, and Bucharest and all the authority of a man who himself spent three years crossing borders without a passport and narrowly avoiding arrest by the Gestapo, PASSPORT TO PERIL paints a heart-stopping picture of desperate men in a desperate time. Like new.
