In Search of Remarkable Trees: On Safari in Southern Africa by: Thomas Pakenham

In Search of Remarkable Trees: On Safari in Southern Africa
by: Thomas Pakenham

Hardcover. NY, Walker Books, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Thomas Pakenham, no stranger to Africa with his award-winning books The Boer War and The Scramble for Africa, nor to remarkable trees with his bestselling Remarkable Trees of the World, combines his two interests on safari in Southern Africa. His particular quarry is the rare, the giant, the very old, the extraordinary, or the simply beautiful-from a giant baobab and a prickly quiver tree in Namibia to a glorious jacaranda in South Africa and sesame bushes attacked by elephants in Botswana. He uncovers trees written about by the great explorers of the past, or associated with magic, folklore, or ritual. The narrative accompanying each image interweaves the stories of Pakenham's own journey-at some moments scaling trees to escape from enraged wildlife, while at others standing in awe before a particular tree, connected by some primitive, atavistic bond-with those of the trees themselves, imbuing each with personality and presence. The result is a beautifully crafted blend of botany and social history, the product of a brilliant photographer, an original mind, and a superlative writer. 208 pages in color. Clean copy. In the Shadow of the General: Modern France and the Myth of De Gaulle by: Hazareesingh, Sudhir

In the Shadow of the General: Modern France and the Myth of De Gaulle
by: Hazareesingh, Sudhir

Hardcover. NY, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. In contemporary France, Charles de Gaulle has become a figure of legend, consistently acclaimed as the nation's pre-eminent "historical" figure. But paradoxes abound. For one, his personal popularity sits oddly with his social origins and professional background. Neither the nobility, nor the Catholic Church, nor the Army is particularly well-regarded in France today, as they are seen to represent antiquated traditions and values. So why, then, do the French nonetheless identify with, celebrate, and even revere this austere and devout nobleman, who remained closely wedded to military values throughout his life? In the Shadow of the General resolves this mystery and explains how de Gaulle has come to occupy such a privileged position in the French imagination. Sudhir Hazareesingh's story of how an individual life was transformed into national myth also tells a great deal about the French collective self in the twenty-first century: its fractured memory, its aspirations to greatness, and its manifold anxieties. Indeed, alongside the tale of de Gaulle's legacy, the author unfolds a much broader narrative: the story of modern France. Clean copy.

Softcover. The MIT Press , reprint, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, The first publication documenting the work of Brooks Stevens, one of America's most influential twentieth-century designers. A long overdue introduction to the work of visionary industrial designer Brooks Stevens (1911-1995). Believing that an industrial designer "should be a businessman, an engineer, and a stylist, in that order," Stevens created thousands of ingenious and beautiful designs for industrial and household products--including a clothes dryer with a window in the front, a wide-mouthed peanut butter jar, and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. ("There's nothing more aerodynamic than a wiener," he explained.) He invented a precursor to the SUV by turning a Jeep into a station wagon after World War II, and streamlined steam irons so that they resembled aircraft. It was Brooks Stevens who, in 1954, coined the phrase "planned obsolescence," defining it as "instilling in the buyer the desire to own something a little newer, a little better, a little sooner than is necessary." This concept has since been blamed for everything from toasters that stop working to today's throwaway culture, but Stevens was simply recognizing the intentionally ephemeral nature of a designer's work. Asked once to name his favorite design, he replied, "none, because every one would have to be restudied for the tastes of tomorrow." Clean copy still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

by: Glenn O' Brien

Softcover. Taschen, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in a pictorial slipcase. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin's work has graced the walls and pages of some of the world's finest galleries and fashion magazines, and if it is surprising that their photographs easily float between these worlds, it is by virtue of their ease in creating imagery that seeks homes in both culturally elite and mainstream outlets. For some of their photographs, such as their portrait of Bjork or campaign for Givenchy, van Lamsweerde and Matadin have worked in collaboration with the art directors M/M (Paris), who have also designed this retrospective that looks back at pretty much everything? that the photographers have been working on for over two decades and that has brought them to the forefront in the fields of both art and fashion. 702 pages. 11 x 11 inches.

Infinite Ice: The Arctic and the Alps from 1860 to the Presentby: Schroder, Klaus Albrecht

Infinite Ice: The Arctic and the Alps from 1860 to the Present
by: Schroder, Klaus Albrecht

Hardcover. US, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Photographs of glaciers and Arctic regions have existed almost as long as photography itself, as a function of documentary and mapmaking endeavors. As early as the 1860s, the medium was used to assess topology, capturing Arctic landscape at a distance and at close quarters, or producing stereoscopic images or panoramas. Glaciologists needed photographs to be taken year after year in order to assess the growth or contraction of the ice, and today repeat photography has become a valuable tool for documenting and demonstrating the real effects of global warming. In Infinite Ice, historical images are reproduced alongside the responses of contemporary artists who have addressed photography and landscape--for example, long, nighttime exposures by Darren Almond, aerial photographs by Olafur Eliasson or panoramic views by Walter Niedermayr. Featuring approximately 100 images, this volume presents a broad variety of glacial photography from 1860 to the present.

Review from back cover, "There's a cast of characters worthy of a modern-day Shakespeare; bathetic descriptions of using the lavatory that would have had Beckett smiling; and the gods' playful pursuit of women that could be lifted straight from Ovid's The Art of Love. Banville, already esteemed for the brilliance of his language, proves in this novel to have a mastery, too, of these many colliding universes."

Ingo Maurer: Designing with Lightby: Bernhard Dessecker and Frank Koschembar

Ingo Maurer: Designing with Light
by: Bernhard Dessecker and Frank Koschembar

Hardcover. Prestel, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 288 pages. The first overview of the work of lighting designer Ingo Maurer, the "poet of light." Ingo Maurer has been illuminating lives since 1966, when he designed his first light fixture for an installation at the Herman Miller showroom in Munich. His creation was entitled Bulb and featured a light bulb within a light bulb. The design was so successful that Maurer had to produce more to match the demand. Since then, his fascination with lighting, his pursuit of simplicity of form, and his talents as a graphic designer and typographer have brought him to the forefront of his field. His work has been exhibited in countless museums and it has brightened urban bridges, artistic exhibitions, retail and commercial spaces as well as numerous private homes. Arranged thematically, this dazzling retrospective brings together an extensive and representative selection of Maurer's lamps and lighting systems. Contributions by design experts, including Issey Miyake and Paola Antonelli, round out this portrait of a creative mind who continues to push the boundaries of lighting design.
