Ascending Chaos: The Art of Masami Teraoka 1966-2006by: Bing, Alison and others

Ascending Chaos: The Art of Masami Teraoka 1966-2006
by: Bing, Alison and others

Hardcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 2007, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: Near Fine, 244 pages illustrated in color. Scholarly essays accompany this monograph on the Japanese-American artist. In publisher's shrinkwrap. Published to coincide with a series of major exhibitions extending beyond 2007, Ascending Chaos is the first major retrospective of Japanese-American artist Masami Teraoka's prolific and acclaimed work thus far. In Teraoka's paintings which have evolved from his wry mimicry of Japanese woodblock prints to much larger and complex canvasses reminiscent of Bosch and Brueghel the political and the personal collide in a riot of sexually frank tableaux. Populated by geishas and goddesses, priests, and politicians, and prominent contemporary figures, these paintings are the spectacular next phase of a wildly inventive career. With essays by renowned art critics who discuss how Teraoka's work inventively marries east and west, sex and religion, Ascending Chaos is a critical overview of this cultural trickster.

Assassination in Vichy: Marx Dormoy and the Struggle for the Soul of Franceby: Brunelle, Gayle/ Finley-Croswhite, Stephanie Annette

Assassination in Vichy: Marx Dormoy and the Struggle for the Soul of France
by: Brunelle, Gayle/ Finley-Croswhite, Stephanie Annette

Softcover. University of Toronto Press , 1st pbk, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover in pictorial wrappers, 312 pages. During the night of 25 July 1941, assassins planted a time bomb in the bed of the former French Interior Minister, Marx Dormoy. The explosion on the following morning launched a two-year investigation that traced Dormoy's murder to the highest echelons of the Vichy regime. Dormoy, who had led a 1937 investigation into the "Cagoule," a violent right-wing terrorist organization, was the victim of a captivating revenge plot. Based on the meticulous examination of thousands of documents, Assassination in Vichy tells the story of Dormoy's murder and the investigation that followed. At the heart of this book lies a true crime that was sensational in its day. A micro-history that tells a larger and more significant story about the development of far-right political movements, domestic terrorism, and the importance of courage, Assassination in Vichy explores the impact of France's deep political divisions, wartime choices, and post-war memory. He signed up for duty with the newly formed Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and after an intensive period of training in various aspects of espionage, found himself on assignment in wartime Cairo, Algiers, and then Caserta. Asylum Earthby: Bragg, Charles

Asylum Earth
by: Bragg, Charles

Hardcover. Boston, Journey Editions, 1st, 1994, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 248 pages illustrated in color and b&w by Bragg. In Asylum Earth, nothing is quite as it seems. Toulouse-Lautrec shares a room with El Greco in "Art Heaven," while back among the living, an irate "Letter to the Editor" demands that someone go in and finish "all those impressionist paintings - why leave just an impression?" Irreverent and brilliantly funny, Bragg brings us a view of his own special reality - and sheds new light on what we know of our own. Witticisms, satire, and irony abound, and no profession or institution escapes Bragg's sharp eye. Often compared to Daumier, Nast, and Bosch, Bragg is a master of observation. Once our human frailties are scrutinized by his myopic gaze, we may never see ourselves in quite the same way again! Illustrated throughout with Bragg's paintings and etchings.

At the Origins of Modern Atheismby: Buckley, Michael J.

At the Origins of Modern Atheism
by: Buckley, Michael J.

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 2nd pr., 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 450 pages. The rise of atheism in the modern world is a religious phenomenon unprecedented in history, both in the number of its adherents and in the security of its cultural establishment. How did so revolutionary a conviction as this arise? What can theological reflection learn from this massive shift in religious consciousness? In this book, Michael J. Buckley investigates the origins and development of modern atheism and argues convincingly that its impetus lies paradoxically in the very attempts to counter it. Although modern atheism finds its initial exponents in Denis Diderot and Paul d'Holbach in the eighteenth century, their works bring to completion a dialectical process that reaches back to the theologians and philosophers of an earlier period. During the seventeenth century, theologians such as Leonard Lessius and Marin Mersenne determined that in order to defend the existence of god, religious apologetics must become philosophy, surrendering as its primary warrant any intrinsically religious experience or evidence. The most influential philosophers of the period, Rene Descartes and Isaac Newton, and the theologians who followed them accepted this settlement, and the new sciences were enlisted to provide the foundation for religion. Clean, bright copy.

Atlas Comics Library No. 3: In the Days of the Rockets!by: Joe Maneely /Hank Chapman /Mike Sekowsky

Atlas Comics Library No. 3: In the Days of the Rockets!
by: Joe Maneely /Hank Chapman /Mike Sekowsky

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2024, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards. In the vein of earlier comics-to-multimedia stars Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, Atlas Comics launched their own pulp hero in 1951, looking ahead to the futuristic year 2000. Across five issues of Space Squadron (and one of Space Worlds), headline talents including George Tuska, Werner Roth and Allen Bellman (with back-up features by Joe Maneely, Christopher Rule, George Klein and Vern Henkel) showed Captain Jet Dixon and his Space Squadron blasting into action, facing cosmic threats like "The Armada of Death," "The Space Demons," "Terror from the Deep," "The Temptress of Jupiter," and "The Midnight Horror." Come 1953, Hank Chapman and Joe Maneely gazed further into the future, envisioning the distant year 2075 and the adventures of Speed Carter, Spaceman. Scripted throughout by Chapman, Maneely launched and drew the first three issues before handing off one issue each to Mike Sekowsky, George Tuska and Bob Forgione, with back-up features by John Romita, Maneely, and Bill Savage. As other aspects of the Atlas line leaned into the peak of pre-Code horror, the Captain of the Space Sentinels and young cadet Johnny Day battled monstrous aliens with stories including "The Space Trap," "A Slaughter in Space," "Die, Spaceman, Die," and "The Thing in Outer Space." Unseen in 70 years, scanned in high resolution, restored to perfection and packaged as one extra-sized, beautiful hardcover volume, In the Days of the Rockets! will open a wormhole to the early cold-war four-color era of futuristic science fantasy.

Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Musicby: Cox, Christoph/ Warner, Daniel

Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Music
by: Cox, Christoph/ Warner, Daniel

Softcover. NY, Bloomsbury, reprint, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 454 pages. Via writings by philosophers, cultural theorists, and composers, Audio Culture explores the interconnections among such forms as minimalism, indeterminacy, musique concrete, free improvisation, experimental music, avant-rock, dub reggae, Ambient music, HipHop, and Techno. Instead of focusing on the putative "crossover" between "high art" and "popular culture," Audio Culture takes all of these musics as experimental practices on par with, and linked to, one another. While cultural studies has tended to look at music (primarily popular music) from a sociological perspective, the concern here is philosophical, musical, and historical. Audio Culture includes writing by some of the most important musical thinkers of the past half-century, among them John Cage, Brian Eno, Glenn Gould, Umberto Eco, Ornette Coleman, Jacques Attali, Simon Reynolds, Pauline Oliveros, Paul D. Miller, David Toop, John Zorn, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and many others. The book is divided into nine thematically-organized sections, each with its own introduction. Section headings include topics such as "Modes of Listening," "Minimalisms," and "DJ Culture." In addition, each essay has its own short introduction, helping the reader to place the essay within musical, historical, and conceptual contexts. The book concludes with a glossary, a timeline, and an extensive discography. Clean, bright copy.

August Sander: Masterpieces
by: Conrath-Scholl, Gabriele

Hardcover. Munich/NY, Prestel, 1st, 2019, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 304 pages. Featuring 60 subjects from August Sander's People of the 20th Century along with another 100 brilliant images from his large-scale project, this book presents a selection of the most stunning images from the photographer's monumental work. August Sander is one of the greatest photographers in international photographic history. With his seminal book People of the 20th Century, he set new standards in portrait photography. Sander's aspiration was to create a typological "composite image" of his time. The ambitious project began in the 1910s and was to occupy him through the 1950s. A novel feature of this book is that all the reproductions are based on vintage prints produced and authorized by August Sander himself. The croppings and the desired tonal values are authentically rendered here for the first time in the long publication history of Sander's brilliant portrait work. The originals are from the rich holdings of the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne and from additional major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Like new in publisher's shrinkwrap. DOMESTIC SHIPPING ONLY.

Aura Rosenberg: Who Am I, What Am I, Where Am I?
by: Nicolas Guagnini (Author), Dan Graham (Author), Mike Kelley (Author), Aura Rosenberg (Photographer)

Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 200 pages. Celebrating the kind of childhood play that signals a search for identity, Who Am I, What Am I, Where Am I? is a series of 70 photographs by New York- and Berlin-based artist Aura Rosenberg. For each picture, a child and an artist were paired up to create an idiosyncratic portrait of the child--each of whom was given access to masks and costumes. Among the collaborating artists are John Baldessari, Coco Fusco, Skuta Helgason, Louise Lawler, Allan McCollum, John Miller, Vik Muniz, Tony Oursler, Jim Shaw, James Siena, Laurie Simmons, Kiki Smith and Haim Steinbach. Rosenberg's contribution to the collaboration is her technically playful style--the photographs are often digitally manipulated to create an array of surreal and humorous effects. This volume draws a compelling parallel between childhood play and the work of the adult artists. Also included are texts by artists Dan Graham, Mike Kelley and Nicolas Guagnini.

Autobiography of a Generation: Italy, 1968 by: Luisa Passerini

Autobiography of a Generation: Italy, 1968
by: Luisa Passerini

Softcover. Wesleyan University Press, reprint, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 166 pages. This book, first published in Italy in 1988 as Autoritratto di gruppo, documents the intricate web of individual and communal experiences in the political movements of the '60s. Luisa Passerini, internationally known for her work in memory, oral history, and their intersections with social movements, sets out to rescue the "forgotten memory" of her generation and to give it literary status. The year 1968 is symbolic in Italy of a whole decade of struggles by students, women, workers, intellectuals, and technicians. Framed and illuminated by sessions of psychoanalysis, this absorbing narrative weaves episodes of Passerini's autobiography - including her involvement in the 1968 uprisings - oral histories of other participants, and Passerini's sociological observations. It raises critical questions about how we reconstruct the past and vividly illustrates the forces that shaped a generation. Clean copy.

Automatic Woman:The Representation of Women in Surrealism by: Katharine Conley

Automatic Woman:The Representation of Women in Surrealism
by: Katharine Conley

Hardcover. University of Nebraska, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with minor fading to edges, b&w illustrations, 179 pages. Contemporary feminist critics have often described Surrealism as a misogynist movement. In Automatic Woman, Katharine Conley addresses this issue, confirming some feminist allegations while qualifying and overturning others. Through insightful analyses of works by a range of writers and artists, Conley develops a complex view of Surrealist portrayals of Woman. Conley begins with a discussion of the composite image of Woman developed by such early male Surrealists as Andre Breton, Francis Picabia, and Paul Eluard. She labels that image "Automatic Woman"--a term that comprises views of Woman as provocative and revolutionary but also as a depersonalized object largely devoid of individuality and volition. This analysis largely confirms feminist critiques of Surrealism. The heart of the book, however, examines the writings of Leonora Carrington and Unica Zurn, two women in the Surrealist movement whose works, Conley argues, anticipate much contemporary feminist art and theory. In concluding, Conley shows how Breton's own views on women evolved in the course of his long career, arriving at last at a position far more congenial to contemporary feminists.

Avedon Advertising
by: Richard Avedon, The Richard Avedon Foundation, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 352 pages. Richard Avedon was one of the most sought-after and influential advertising photographers in America from the 1940s to the beginning of the 21st century, creating work that exemplified Madison Avenue at the height of its influence in world culture. Working with a talented cadre of models, copy writers, and art directors, Avedon made images that enticed consumers to embrace the new, especially in the areas of fashion and beauty, with campaigns for Revlon, Chanel, Calvin Klein, Dior, and Versace, among many others. Avedon Advertising tells this story, reproducing memorable ads that range from the buoyant 1940s and 1950s, when post-war prosperity opened up new experiences to consumers; through the explosive '60s; and into the era defined by celebrity culture and global brand awareness.

Awful Ogre Running Wild (SIGNED COPY)by: Jack Prelutsky and Paul O. Zelinsky

Awful Ogre Running Wild (SIGNED COPY)
by: Jack Prelutsky and Paul O. Zelinsky

Hardcover. NY, Greenwillow, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 40 pages, color illustrations by Paul Zelinsky. SIGNED BY BOTH AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR. The huge but rather childlike character featured in Prelutsky and Zelinsky's Awful Ogre's Awful Day (2001) returns in a new volume of light verse accomplanied by full-page and double-page illustrations. Taking place during the one-eyed ogre's summer vacation, the first-person poems run the gamut from somewhat gross ("Awful Ogre Has Insomnia") to droll ("Awful Ogre Attends a Concert") to tenderhearted ("Awful Ogre Pays a Visit") to sublime ("Awful Ogre Goes Dragon-Watching"). Prelutsky shows his sure sense of rhythm and rhyme as well as his child-pleasing sense of humor in this series of 17 clearly written poems. Most appear on double-page spreads, accompanied by large ink-and-watercolor illustrations that reflect the tone of the verse. Highlighting the barely controlled chaos of this amiable ogre's world, the pictures create a visually imaginative setting where anything can happen and, in the fun-to-discover details, something often does.
