Kenwood: Paintings in the Iveagh Bequestby: Bryant, Julius

Kenwood: Paintings in the Iveagh Bequest
by: Bryant, Julius

Hardcover. Swindon, English Heritage, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 434 pages, illustrated throughout in color and b&w. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. The Iveagh Bequest at Kenwood House in Hampstead, London, is one of the world's great private art collections assembled by an individual. In quality it challenges the Frick collection in New York, with whose eponymous collector Iveagh was in competition for acquisitions during the great age of the industrial barons on both sides of the Atlantic, and the Wallace collection in London. They all saw collecting great art - much as the oligarchs of today - as ultimate status symbols.

by: Armitage, Shelley

Softcover. Jackson MS, University Press of Mississippi , 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 227 pages, b&w illustrations. A self-made woman with no formal art training, Rose O'Neill (1875-1944) was not only hugely financially successful through her illustration work and the production of Kewpie dolls, but also through her exhibited drawings and sculpture in solo shows in Paris and New York. Kewpie made her a famous figure commercially, but few recognize her today as a serious artist and a political subversive who expressed sympathy for minorities, suffragettes, and victims of intolerance and who struggled with her own expression in a male-dominated field. Kid of Coney Island, The: Fred Thompson and the Rise of American Amusementsby: Register, Woody

Kid of Coney Island, The: Fred Thompson and the Rise of American Amusements
by: Register, Woody

Hardcover. NY, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 400 pages. Price-clipped. Clean covers and dust jacket, pages crisp and unmarked, tight binding; clean copy. A generation before Walt Disney, Fred Thompson was the "boy-wonder" of American popular amusements. At the turn of the 20th century, Thompson's entrepreneurial drive made him into an entertainment mogul who helped to define the popular culture of his day. In this lively biography, Woody Register tells Thompson's remarkable story and examines the transformation of commerce and entertainment as American society moved into an era of mass marketing and large-scale corporate enterprise. Getting his start as a promoter of carnival shows at world's fairs, Thompson was one of the principal developers of Coney Island, where he created the majestic Luna Park. Register traces Thompson's career as he built the mammoth Hippodrome Theater in Manhattan, where he mounted many productions noted for their spectacular--and spectacularly costly--staging effects. Register shows how Thompson's fantasies appealed to the growing legions of Americans who found themselves in a world that seemed increasingly "businesslike" and profit oriented. He illustrates how Thompson aggressively marketed to adult consumers a world of make-believe and childlike play, carefully crafting his own public image as "the boy who never grew up." Colorful, well-written, and insightful, The Kid of Coney Island brings to life a kaleidoscopic era in New York history as well as one of its most striking characters.

by: Mark Braude

Hardcover. NY, W. W. Norton, 1st, 2022, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 290 pages, color and b&w illustrations. Kiki was once the symbol of bohemian Paris. But if she is remembered today, it is only for posing for several now-celebrated male artists, including Amedeo Modigliani and Alexander Calder, and especially photographer Man Ray. Why has Man Ray's legacy endured while Kiki has become a footnote? Kiki and Man Ray met in 1921 during a chance encounter at a cafe. What followed was an explosive decade-long connection, both professional and romantic, during which the couple grew and experimented as artists, competed for fame, and created many of the shocking images that cemented Man Rays reputation as one of the great artists of the modern era. Remainder dot to top edge, otherwise clean.

Kill My Mother: A Graphic Novelby: Feiffer, Jules

Kill My Mother: A Graphic Novel
by: Feiffer, Jules

Softcover. New York, Liveright, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 160 pages. Softcover with light edgewear to wrappers. Duotone comics throughout. Adding to a legendary career that includes a Pulitzer Prize, an Academy Award, Obie Awards, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Cartoonist Society and the Writers Guild of America, Jules Feiffer now presents his first noir graphic novel. Kill My Mother is a loving homage to the pulp-inspired films and comic strips of his youth. Channeling Eisner's The Spirit, along with the likes of Hammett, Chandler, Cain, John Huston, and Billy Wilder, and spiced with the deft humor for which Feiffer is renowned, Kill My Mother centers on five formidable women from two unrelated families, linked fatefully and fatally by a has-been, hard-drinking private detective. In a drawing style derived from Steve Canyon and The Spirit, Feiffer combines his long-honed skills as cartoonist, playwright, and screenwriter to draw us into this seductively menacing world where streets are black with soot and rain, and base motives and betrayal are served on the rocks in bars unsafe to enter. Bluesy, fast-moving, and funny, Kill My Mother is a trip to Hammett-Chandler-Cain Land: a noir-graphic novel like the movies they don't make anymore.

Killing Ground: The Civil War and the Changing American Landscape (INSCRIBED COPY)by: John Huddleston

Killing Ground: The Civil War and the Changing American Landscape (INSCRIBED COPY)
by: John Huddleston

Hardcover. Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket with a small closed tear to front panel. INSCRIBED BY HUDDLESTON on the dedication page. Huddleston has paired archival images of the first modern war with his own, contemporary color shots of the same locations, at the same time of year, at the same time of day. Some sites of suicidal charges have become Kmarts, mini-malls or swamps strewn with metal and plastic trash. The juxtapositions possess surprising power. In an overexposed and damaged archival shot of the Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, Ga., a filthy crowd of anonymous men packs the frame, while on the facing page Huddleston presents his own fine-tuned image of a muted, borderless sky. Office buildings, grocery stores and fast food franchises have sprouted where Union Major General George H. Thomas and Confederate General John Bell Hood slugged it out for December days in Nashville 141 years ago. Near the site of some of the heaviest fighting between blue and gray, a KFC sign now advertises discounts on the colonel's secret recipe. Clean copy.

King and Messiahby: Aage Bentzen

King and Messiah
by: Aage Bentzen

Hardcover. London, Lutterworth, 1st UK, 1955, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, blue cloth with faded gilt lettering on spine, 115 pages. A fascinating glimpse into the debate in Scandinavia concerning a number of inter-related Biblical themes focused on the concept of the Messiah, a debate associated with scholars such as Mowinckel, Pedersen, Widengren, and Bentzen himself. The argument traces the development of the Messianic figure from its Old Testament roots, starting with the Messiah of many of the Psalms, which represents a demythologised form of the Oriental conception of kingship, through the eschatologised Messiah of the prophetic thought of Isaiah and Micah, and then to the prophet-Messiah of Second Isaiah, which although still a present and entirely human figure, embodies the insight that the saviour of Israel must suffer and be cast in the role of a Moses Redivivus as leader of a new Exodus. The Son of Man of Daniel 7 carries this eschatologising process even further, until the Christology of the New Testament emerges as a creative synthesis of these Old Testament types. In this synthesis, Jesus is a new Adam, the Messiah present in the flesh and present still in His body the Church, the suffering Prophet playing the part of the new Moses and the once and future Divine King. Bentzen argues that ultimately this figure of Christ the Messiah transcends not only the Old Testament types on which it is based, but also the subsequent historical development of the Christian Messianic tradition.

by: Talbott, Hudson

New York, Morrow, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Color illustrations by Hudson Talbott. Unpaginated. Tape repair to title page. As a lad of only sixteen years, Arthur pulled the sword from the stone and thus became High King of all Britain. But scarcely has he begun to arrange his court when twelve of the country's lesser kings, jealous of Arthur's glory, declare war on him. Culminating in the Battle of Bedegraine, this war is fateful in more ways than one--for not only does it secure Arthur's place among his people, it also unites his destiny with that of Lady Guinevere. In this, the second volume of his Tales of King Arthur series, Hudson Talbott masterfully retells the saga of Arthur's early days as leader of Britain, his building of Camelot, and the dedication of the Round Table--a unique brotherhood of knights devoted to unity and peace.

Kingdoms of Edward Hicks, Theby: Weekley, Carolyn J.

Kingdoms of Edward Hicks, The
by: Weekley, Carolyn J.

Hardcover. New York , Abrams, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 254 pages, 173 illustrations, 131 in color. Although he is now seen as a progenitor of the "naive" style, during his lifetime Edward Hicks (1780-1849) was known only as a devout, impoverished Quaker minister who liked to paint. With a few exceptions, his extant body of work is made up of 62 "Peaceable Kingdom" pictures, based on Isaiah's biblical prophecy. Although these paintings, known for their charmingly wide-eyed and sensuous beasts, use potent color and effective design, they are technically unsophisticated and repetitive in the extreme. But they contain a powerfully serene devoutness, a mood probably expressed in compensation for Hicks's guilt about an avocation viewed as frivolous by other Quakers. As the popularity of folk art boomed in the early 20th century, Hicks's homely visions were popularized and became the focus of scholarly attention, and this work is probably the best to date. Weekley, the director of museums at Colonial Williamsburg, shrewdly considers Hicks's "secular" life and art through the filter of his intense piety and copiously illustrates her large-format book with brilliant color plates.

Kings in Their Castles: Photographs of Queer Men at Home
by: Tom Atwood and Charles Kaiser

Hardcover. University of Wisconsin Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 92 pages. Kings in Their Castles, a collective portrait of the gay urban community in America, offers a personal view of some of our leading artists, writers, filmmakers, composers, musicians, and designers. Among the celebrities Atwood photographs in their playful, revealing homes are Edward Albee, Todd Oldham, John Waters, Ross Bleckner, Joel Schumacher, Junior Vasquez, Michael Cunningham, Simon Doonan, Andrew Solomon, Ned Rorem, James Dale, David Del Tredici, Tommy Tune, John Ashbery, Edmund White, and John Bartlett. Atwood also documents the bohemians, beatniks, mavericks, and iconoclasts, an urban community that is slowly disappearing. Capturing whimsical, intimate moments of daily life and portraying the complexity and diversity of this loosely linked society, Atwood reveals some of the most intriguing characters and homes in gay America. These beautiful fine art prints--shifting between the pictorial and the theatrical--become both a witness and a celebration.

Klimowski Poster Book by: Klimowski, Andrzej

Klimowski Poster Book
by: Klimowski, Andrzej

Hardcover. London, SelfMadeHero, 1st, 2018, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 128 pages. In the mid-1970s, Klimowski's fearlessly original artwork caught the eye of leading Polish theatre and film companies, for whom he designed some of the period's most influential and iconic posters. The London-born artist, who moved to Poland at a time when many East Europeans dreamed of going West, went on to create posters for works by filmmakers and playwrights from Scorsese to Altman, Beckett to Brecht. Drawing on folk art, Polish Surrealism and the work of his mentor at the Warsaw Academy, Henryk Tomaszewski, Klimowski uses techniques including photomontage and linocut to create posters that are filled with metaphor, drama and originality. The Klimowski Poster Book compiles the best of his Polish work, while also tracing his career after his return to London, where he remains Emeritus Professor of Illustration at the Royal College of Art. Clean, bright copy.

Klimt and the Women of Vienna's Golden Age, 1900-1918by: Tobias G. Natter

Klimt and the Women of Vienna's Golden Age, 1900-1918
by: Tobias G. Natter

Hardcover. NY, Prestel , 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 320 pages. This authoritative and generously illustrated book highlights Gustav Klimt's portrayals of women in his work. Klimt was a central figure in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, and a crucial link between nineteenth-century Symbolism and Modernism. His sensual portrayals of women are among his most celebrated works and the focus of this book. Highlights of the publication include Klimt's most important society portraits, such as Serena Lederer (1899); Gertrud Loew (1902); Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907); Mada Primavesi (1913); Elisabeth Lederer (1914-16); and Ria Munk III (1917). These works cover the gamut of Klimt's portrait style, from his early ethereal works influenced by Symbolism and the Pre-Raphaelite movement to his so-called "golden style," as well as his almost Fauvist depictions.

Knocking on Heaven's Door: Six Minor Leaguers in Search of the Baseball Dreamby: Dobrow, Marty

Knocking on Heaven's Door: Six Minor Leaguers in Search of the Baseball Dream
by: Dobrow, Marty

Softcover. Amherst MA, University of Massachusetts Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 323 pages, b&w illustrations. Award-winning sportswriter Marty Dobrow examines the lives of six minor leaguers-Brad Baker, Doug Clark, Manny Delcarmen, Randy Ruiz, Matt Torra, and Charlie Zink-all struggling to make their way to "The Show." What links them together, aside from their common goal, is that they are all represented by the same team of agents-Jim and Lisa Masteralexis and their partner Steve McKelvey-whose own aspirations parallel those of the players they represent. The story begins during spring training in 2005 and ends in the fall of 2008, followed by a brief epilogue that updates each player's fortunes through the 2009 season. Clean copy.

Knots: Storiesby: Oyehaug, Gunnhild/ Dickson, Kari (Translator)

Knots: Stories
by: Oyehaug, Gunnhild/ Dickson, Kari (Translator)

Hardcover. NY, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. First published in Norway in 2004, Knots is Gunnhild Oyehaug's radical collection of short stories that range from the surreal to the oddly mundane, and prod the discomforts of mental, sexual, and familial bonds. In both precise short-shorts and ruminative longer tales, Oyehaug meanders through the tangled, jinxed, and unavoidable conflicts of love and desire. From young Rimbaud's thwarted passions to the scandalous disappearance of an entire family, these stories do the chilling work of tracing the outlines of what could have been in both the quietly morbid and the delightfully comical. A young man is born with an uncuttable umbilical cord and spends his life physically tethered to his mother; a tipsy uncle makes an uncomfortable toast with unforeseeable repercussions; and a dissatisfied deer yearns to be seen. Knut Hamsun Remembers America: Essays and Stories, 1885-1949by: Knut Hamsun/ Richard Nelson Current

Knut Hamsun Remembers America: Essays and Stories, 1885-1949
by: Knut Hamsun/ Richard Nelson Current

Hardcover. Columbia MO, University of Missouri, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. When Americans remember him at all, they no doubt think of Knut Hamsun (1859-1952) as the author of Hunger or as the Norwegian who, along with Vidkun Quisling, betrayed his country by supporting the Nazis during World War II. Yet Hamsun, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1920 for his novel The Growth of the Soil, was and remains one of the most important and influential novelists of his time. Knut Hamsun Remembers America is a collection of thirteen essays and stories based largely on Hamsun's experiences during the four years he spent in the United States when he was a young man. Most of these pieces have never been published before in an English translation, and none are readily available. Hamsun's feelings about America and American ways were complex. For the most part, they were more negative than positive, and they found expression in many of his writings--directly in his reminiscences and indirectly in his fiction. In On the Cultural Life of Modern America, his first major book, he portrayed the United States as a land of gross and greedy materialism, populated by illiterates who were utterly lacking in artistic originality or refinement. Although the pieces in this collection are not all anti-American, most of them emphasize the strangeness and unpleasantness, as the author saw it, of life in what he called Yankeeland.
