Are You My Mother? A Comic Dramaby: Bechdel, Alison

Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama
by: Bechdel, Alison

Hardcover. Boston, Houghton Mifflin , 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 290 pages, illustrated in b&w and reddish tones by Bechdel. In a bright, unclipped dust jacket. Alison Bechdel's Fun Home was a pop culture and literary phenomenon. Now, a second thrilling tale of filial sleuthery, this time about her mother: voracious reader, music lover, passionate amateur actor. Also a woman, unhappily married to a closeted gay man, whose artistic aspirations simmered under the surface of Bechdel's childhood . . . and who stopped touching or kissing her daughter good night, forever, when she was seven. Poignantly, hilariously, Bechdel embarks on a quest for answers concerning the mother-daughter gulf. It's a richly layered search that leads readers from the fascinating life and work of the iconic twentieth-century psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, to one explosively illuminating Dr. Seuss illustration, to Bechdel's own (serially monogamous) adult love life. And, finally, back to Mother -- to a truce, fragile and real-time, that will move and astonish all adult children of gifted mothers.

Aristotle's Metaphysics Lambda: Symposium Aristotelicum by: Frede, Michael /Charles, David [Editors)

Aristotle's Metaphysics Lambda: Symposium Aristotelicum
by: Frede, Michael /Charles, David [Editors)

Hardcover. UK, Oxford University Press, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 366 pages. A distinguished group of scholars of ancient philosophy here presents a systematic study of the twelfth book of Aristotle's Metaphysics. Lambda, which can be regarded as a self-standing treatise on substance, has been attracting particular attention in recent years, and was chosen as the focus of the fourteenth Symposium Aristotelicum, from which this volume derives. At the Symposium, each of Lambda's ten chapters was taken in turn as the subject of asession at which a specially written paper was read to and discussed by the assembled symposiasts. (The ninth chapter commanded two sessions by dint of its particular difficulty.) The papers have been revised inthe light of discussion, and are now offered to a wider audience as a discursive commentary on points of particular philosophical interest covering all of Lambda. Michael Frede's extensive Introduction aims to give a broader view of Lambda as a whole and the problems it raises, and thus to provide the context for the discussion of each of the chapters. Name on front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes
by: Cassidy, Kyle

Hardcover. Krause Publications, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 208 pages. As the 2004 Presidential Election was beginning to take shape, Kyle Cassidy took note of the important role the simple concept of gun ownership was playing. Hardly anyone he knew didn't have an opinion in the debate over owning guns. Why was a constitutionally protected right so heavily debated, and who exactly as these folks that own guns? "I began to wonder who these seventy or so million Americans were, how they lived and what was important to them. I set out to photographs as many gun owners as I could and ask them one question: "Why do you own a gun." Cassidy traveled over 20,000 miles, crisscrossing the country to meet with gun owners in their homes. Cassidy's photo essays create a powerful, thought provoking and sometimes startling view of gun ownership in the U.S. These "everyman" portraits, and the accompanying views of gun owners, fashion a riveting and provocative book.

Arnold Newman: The Early Workby: Philip Brookman , Arnold Newman

Arnold Newman: The Early Work
by: Philip Brookman , Arnold Newman

Hardcover. GR, Steidl, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 232 pages. When celebrated photographer Arnold Newman began his career in 1938 in chain portrait studios in Philadelphia, Baltimore and West Palm Beach, he also immediately began to make abstract and documentary photography on his own, studying people and places impoverished by the Depression. In June of 1941, Beaumont Newhall of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Alfred Stieglitz "discovered" him, and he was given an exhibit with Ben Rose at the A.D. Gallery that September. There Newman began to combine his independent work with the portraiture that had been his bread-and-butter, developing the approach for which he is best known, which came to be called "environmental portraiture," and which is so widely influential today that it might be the new standard practice. This style made Newman a distinctive contributor to publications like Life, Vanity Fair, and the New York Times Magazine, brought him into the collections of museums around the world, including The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the International Center of Photography in New York, and led to his recognition in photography histories and with awards including France's Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters. The photographs collected here were made before Newman achieved recognition as a pioneering portraitist, during the formative years from 1938 to 1942. They highlight the early stirrings of a great photographic master.

Aroma: The Cultural History of Smell
by: Classen Constance; Howes David; Synnott Anthony

Softcover. London/NY, Routledge, 1st, 1994, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 248 pages. Clean copy. mell is a social phenomenon, given particular meanings and values by different cultures. Odours form the building blocks of cosmologies, class hierarchies, and political odours. They can enforce social structures or transgress them, unite people or divide them, empower or disempower. The authors argue that the sociology of smell is repressed in the modern West, and its social history ignored. This book breaks the "olfactory silence" of modernity. It offers the first comprehensive exploration of the cultural role of odours in Western history - from antiquity to the present. It also covers a wide variey of non-Western societies. Its topics range from the medieval concept of the "odour of sanctity", to the aromatherapies of South America, and from olfactory stereotypes of gender and ethnicity in the modern West to the role of smell in postmodernity. Its subject matter will fascinate anyone who likes to nose around in the inner workings of culture.

by: Charles M. Rosenberg

Hardcover. Notre Dame IN, University of Notre Dame Press, 1st, 1990, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, red cloth stamped in black and gilt. 227 pages plus a section of b&w plates in rear.. A series of nine papers delivered at a conference with the same name in 1988 at the University of Notre Dame. It considered the relationship between politics and the literary and visual arts. Political scientists and anthropologists focus on the institutions that express power relationships. The aim of the Notre Dame Conference was to consider the relationship between politics and the literary and visual arts. The visual arts considered in this volume range from the traditional fine arts categories of painting, sculpture and architecture to minor art objects such as medals, badges, banners and seals. In general terms, the study of politics denotes the study of power relationships. Within this larger framework political scientists and anthropologists have chosen to focus on the institutions and structures that express these relationships and/or the actions that are undertaken by individuals and groups to define, alter, or reinforce them. Art Glass Nouveauby: Ray and Lee Grover

Art Glass Nouveau
by: Ray and Lee Grover

Hardcover. Rutland VT, Tuttle Publishing, 1st, 1989, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 170 pages. This art book contains many unique pieces that were produced extensively in the United States, Great Britain, and other European countries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when this fine art was at its height. All of the illustrations are in full color. The book contains 424 plates, 50 of which are full page. The complete description of each piece indicates its size, the type of glass used, its identification marks, the names of the designer and/or producer, when known, and its present owner. While every significant type of art glass produced during this period is covered in the succinct text, the exciting galaxy of 424 plates, interspersed throughout the book, were selected not only because of their rare beauty and authenticity, but also to show representative pieces, similar to those that are still obtainable. Most important of all in identifying a piece and determining its value, according to the authors, are its color, its shape, and the texture of its surface, to which they constantly give particular attention.
