Morris Lapidus
by: Desilets, Deborah

Hardcover. NY, Assouline, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 80 pages. Morris Lapidus, the famous mid-century architect, outraged the architectural profession and riled critics with an architecture that was popularly embraced. His Miami Beach resort hotels - the Fontainebleau, the Eden Roc, and the Bal Harbour Sheraton - are synonymous with the glamour of Miami Beach in the 50s. Lapidus hotels are infamous as the stomping grounds of the Rat Pack and their fellow movie stars. Yet, during his life he was never published in architectural magazines and was discredited by the architectural profession - before undergoing a renaissance as a prophet of postmodernism. This book establishes the importance of his work and offers private insights into a man who once said why be exotic in private?

Mosby's Rangers (Collector's Library of the Civil War)by: Williamson, James J.

Mosby's Rangers (Collector's Library of the Civil War)
by: Williamson, James J.

Hardcover. NY, Time Life, reprint, 1982, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 389 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Dark blue leather bound with gilt titles to front cover and spine. Embossed decoration on front cover. Gilt text block edges, red ribbon marker. Clean, tight copy. The commander of a Georgia regiment through much of the Civil War mused later in his memoirs that the heaviest burden fell not upon the man at the front, but upon the woman who waited and prayed for victory: "While the men were carried away with the drunkenness of the war, she dwelt in the stillness of her desolate home." Sallie Brock Putnam spoke for Southern womanhood. She was a native of Madison County, Virginia, and seems to have come from a family of good social standing. The book contains an unexpectedly full history of the Civil War; the author exhibits a strong grasp of strategy and tactics. But at its heart is an incisive eyewitness account of life in a capital that was swollen to four times its normal population by the exigencies of war. Brock's descriptions of Jefferson Davis' inauguration and the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 are dramatic, but no more so than her accounts of nameless refugees, race relations, opportunistic merchants and blockade runners. Confederate prisons and family matters. In contrast to other female Southern writers of the period, she was more sober and factual, less gossipy and speculative. She wrote with shrewdness and maturity, and with a remarkable lack of self-pity and exaggeration. Yet the reader cannot miss her courage, sacrifice and suffering. Sallie Brock Putnam died in 1911.

Mosquitoby: Gayl Jones

Mosquito
by: Gayl Jones

Softcover. Boston, Beacon Press, 1st, 1999, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, illustrated wraps, 616 pages. Clean, bright copy. Sojourner Nadine Jane Johnson, also known as Mosquito, is an African-American truck driver. Set in a south Texas border town, Mosquito is the story of her accidental and yet growing involvement in "the new underground railroad," a sanctuary movement for Mexican immigrants. Mosquito's journey begins when she discovers Maria, a stowaway who nearly gives birth in the back of the truck; Maria will eventually name her baby Journal, a misspelled tribute to her unwitting benefactor Sojourner. Along the road, Mosquito introduces us to Delgadina, a Chicana bartender who fries cactus, writes haunting stories, and studies to become a detective - one of the most original and appealing characters in all of Jones's fiction. We also meet Monkey Bread, a childhood pal who is, improbably, assistant to a blonde star in Hollywood, where Mosquito pays her a memorable visit. As her understanding of the immigrants' need to forge new lives and identities deepens, so too does Mosquito's romance with Ray, a gentle revolutionary, philosopher, and, perhaps, a priest.

Most Uncommon Jacksonians: The Radical Leaders of the Early Labor Movement by: Edward Pessen

Most Uncommon Jacksonians: The Radical Leaders of the Early Labor Movement
by: Edward Pessen

Hardcover. Albany NY, State University of New York Press, 1st, 1967, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn and tanned dust jacket, 208 pages with index. This book attempts to throw new light on that early labor movement, mainly by answering the questions that modern critics have raised concerning its authenticity, but the major concern of the volume is with the labor leaders' views regarding American society. If these were uncommon labor leaders, they were also uncommon Jacksonians. At a time when the mass of Americans seemed to be engaged in a frenzied contest for material gain, and increasingly optimistic about their chances, the labor leaders stood apart both from the pursuit of the main chance and from its moralistic critics. Name on front fly leaf otherwise clean.

Moving Pictures: Contemporary Photography and Video from the Guggenheim Museum Collectionby: Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Matthew Barney

Moving Pictures: Contemporary Photography and Video from the Guggenheim Museum Collection
by: Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Matthew Barney

Hardcover. NY, Guggenheim Museum, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 228 pages. During the late 1960s and 70s, a paradigm shift occurred within visual culture: photography and the moving image were absorbed into critical art practices. In particular, these mediums were used to record ephemeral or performative events and to render visible conceptual systems or to question the supposed objectivity of representation itself. This volume focuses primarily on artworks from the last decade and proposes that the extensive use of reproducible mediums in today's art has its roots in an earlier formative period. By the end of the 70s, many artists turned to photography as a vehicle through which to critique photographic representation and to subvert an art system premised on the notion of the original. While this practice came to define much of the 80s postmodern art, its legacy for the 90s was essentially the license to indulge in photographic fantasy, image construction, and cinematic narrative. Artists working today freely manipulate their representations of the empirical world or invent entirely new cosmologies. They process their subject matter through conceptual systems or use digital processes to alter their images. Some directly intervene in the environment, subtly shifting components of the found world and establishing their quiet presence in it; others fabricate entire architectural environments for the camera lens. This current state of the arts and its recent history are represented via more than 150 works by 55 artists, including Nam June Paik, Kara Walker, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Ana Mendieta, Bruce Nauman, Robert Smithson, Christian Boltanski, Sophie Calle, Fischli & Weiss, Ann Hamilton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Elger Esser, others.

Mozart and the Nazis: How the Third Reich Abused a Cultural Iconby: Erik Levi

Mozart and the Nazis: How the Third Reich Abused a Cultural Icon
by: Erik Levi

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 336 pages. Despite the apparent incompatibility between Mozart's humanitarian and cosmopolitan outlook and Nazi ideology, the Third Reich tenaciously promoted the great composer's music to further the goals of the fascist regime. In this revelatory book, Erik Levi draws on period articles, diaries, speeches, and other archival materials to provide a new understanding of how the Nazis shamelessly manipulated Mozart for their own political advantage. The book also explores the continued Jewish veneration of the composer during this period while also highlighting some of the disturbing legacies of Mozart reception that resulted from Nazi appropriation of his work. Augmented by rare contemporary illustrations, Mozart and the Nazis will be widely welcomed by readers with interests in music, German history, Holocaust studies, propaganda, and politics in the twentieth century. Clean copy.

Mozart: A Cultural Biographyby: Robert W. Gutman

Mozart: A Cultural Biography
by: Robert W. Gutman

Softcover. San Diego, Harcourt Brace,, reprint, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 839 pages, contains two glossy black and white plates sections. This major work, the result of years of careful study and analysis, places Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's life and music in the context of the intellectual, political and artistic currents of eighteenth-century Europe. The result is a fresh interpretation of Mozart's genius, as Robert Gutman shows the great composer in a new light. With an informed and sensitive handling, Mozart emerges as an affectionate and generous man with family and friends, self-deprecating, witty, and winsome but also an austere moralist, incisive and purposeful. The major genres in which Mozart worked-chamber music, liturgical, theater and keyboard compositions, concertos, operas, symphonies, and oratorios-are unfolded to reveal a man of luminous intellect. Mozart is an extraordinary portrait of a man and his times and a brilliant distillation of musical thought.

Mr. Tiger Goes Wild (Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards)
by: Brown, Peter

Hardcover. US, Little, Brown, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Clean, unmarked copy in excellent condition. Mr. Tiger lives in a perfectly fine world of prim and proper ladies and gentlemen. One day, the stiff suits, dainty teas, and Victorian manners begin to bore him... and he has a very wild idea. This "it's okay to be different" story stands out from other picture books on the topic thanks to Brown's delightfully clever illustrations and masterful compositions. From the tiger-striped cover that begs to be petted to the ingenious pops of bright orange (Brown's new signature color?) amid muted browns and grays, the award-winning illustrator does not disappoint. Children will appreciate Mr. Tiger's transformation and the way his friends eventually accept his (and their own) uniqueness. Several wordless spreads encourage audience participation while subtle visual clues gently build his character. A full spread featuring the newly liberated Mr. Tiger au naturel is delivered with pitch-perfect comedic timing and is guaranteed to inspire wild giggles.

Multitude of Sins, Aby: Ford, Richard

Multitude of Sins, A
by: Ford, Richard

Hardcover. New York, Knopf, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 286 pages. Light edge wear to dust jacket. Else very good. One of the most celebrated and unflinching chroniclers of modern life now explores, in this masterful collection of short stories, the grand theme of intimacy, love, and their failures. With remarkable insight and candor, Richard Ford examines liaisons in and out and to the sides of marriage. An illicit visit to the Grand Canyon reveals a vastness even more profound. A couple weekending in Maine try to recapture the ardor that has disappeared from their life together. And on a spring evening, a young wife tells her husband of her affair with the host of the dinner party they're about to join. The rigorous intensity Ford brings to these vivid, unforgettable dramas marks this as his most powerfully arresting book to date-confirming the judgment of the New York Times Book Review that "nobody now writing looks more like an American classic."

Murder Has a Public Face: Crime and Punishment in the Speed Graphic Eraby: Millett, Larry

Murder Has a Public Face: Crime and Punishment in the Speed Graphic Era
by: Millett, Larry

Hardcover. US, Borealis Books, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 128 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Clean, unmarked copy with only minor wear to dust jacket. In his popular Strange Days, Dangerous Nights, Larry Millett delivered Weegee-style images of midwestern noir from the photo files of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He returns in this new volume with a focus on the "dangerous"murder cases from the forties and fifties, memorialized in intimate and telling photographs. There is Arthur DeZeler, accused of bludgeoning his wife, Grace, and sinking her body in a northern lake. Laura Miller, single and pregnant, ran for help after gunshots killed her married lover. Arnold Axilrod, a mild-mannered dentist with a penchant for over-sedating his female patients, was arrested when the lifeless body of one of those patients was discovered in a Minneapolis alley. And, finally, there is Arnold Larson, the personable salesman with a winning smile and a bad temper. Millett traces these four sensational crimes from the moment the victim was found, through the search for the killer, to the court trial and resulting imprisonment or acquittal--there are two of each. All are copiously illustrated with shots from the bulky Speed Graphic camera, which yielded rich, textured views in an era when photographers enjoyed unrestricted access to police matters ranging from found bodies to jail cells. The images dramatically evoke these crimes of passion now more than a half-century old, offering a thrilling immersion into Minnesota noir.
