Richmond During the War; Four Years of Personal Observation By a Richmond Lady (Leather Bound Hardcover) by: Putnam, Sallie B.

Richmond During the War; Four Years of Personal Observation By a Richmond Lady (Leather Bound Hardcover)
by: Putnam, Sallie B.

Hardcover. NY, Time Life, reprint, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 389 pages. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Dark blue leather bound with gilt titles to front cover and spine. Embossed decoration on front cover. Gilt text block edges, red ribbon marker. Clean, tight copy. The commander of a Georgia regiment through much of the Civil War mused later in his memoirs that the heaviest burden fell not upon the man at the front, but upon the woman who waited and prayed for victory: "While the men were carried away with the drunkenness of the war, she dwelt in the stillness of her desolate home." Sallie Brock Putnam spoke for Southern womanhood. She was a native of Madison County, Virginia, and seems to have come from a family of good social standing. The book contains an unexpectedly full history of the Civil War; the author exhibits a strong grasp of strategy and tactics. But at its heart is an incisive eyewitness account of life in a capital that was swollen to four times its normal population by the exigencies of war. Brock's descriptions of Jefferson Davis' inauguration and the Richmond Bread Riot of 1863 are dramatic, but no more so than her accounts of nameless refugees, race relations, opportunistic merchants and blockade runners. Confederate prisons and family matters. In contrast to other female Southern writers of the period, she was more sober and factual, less gossipy and speculative. She wrote with shrewdness and maturity, and with a remarkable lack of self-pity and exaggeration. Yet the reader cannot miss her courage, sacrifice and suffering. Sallie Brock Putnam died in 1911.

Ritualised Friendship & The Greek Cityby: Herman, Gabriel

Ritualised Friendship & The Greek City
by: Herman, Gabriel

Hardcover. Cambridge University Press, 1st, 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, dust jacket with light fading to spine, 212 pages, b&w illustrations. In this book, Gabriel Herman offers a new interpretation of Greek xenia, a term traditionally rendered as 'guest-friendship'. Drawing on contemporary literary sources and inscriptions as well as anthropology, sociology, and comparative evidence from other times, he shows that xenia was a bond of fictitious kinship akin to godparenthood, rather than a tie of hospitality or ordinary 'friendship'. Starting off from this proposition, he develops a dynamic model of the formation of elite relationships and values. He explores the concepts of obligation and loyalty, gift and bribe, treason and patriotism, and places the Greek city within a new context of power relations. Clean copy.

Roaring Camp: The Social World of the California Gold Rushby: Johnson, Susan Lee

Roaring Camp: The Social World of the California Gold Rush
by: Johnson, Susan Lee

Hardcover. NY, W. W. Norton, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 464 pages, b&w illustrations. Johnson's exquisitely researched and beautifully written book starts with the premise that the Southern mines during the early years of the California Gold Rush (1948-1852) were "a grand field for human interaction and connectedness." They were a kind of experiment in human relations, and Johnson points the spot light on the dynamic and flexible quality of race, gender, and sexuality. She argues that the social world of the gold rush - the organization of domestic labor, the leisure pursuits, and gaming activities (both mining and gambling) - reflected a topsy-turvy world not at all comfortable with itself. Johnson tells a story whereby the gold rush, particularly the relationships that developed in the more diverse and less wealthy Southern mines, created a crisis of racial and gender representation that only sorted itself out with the collusion of Anglo miners and the authority of the state. Johnson notes that Anglo miners, "Conflated their daily lives with a project of national expansion and economic growth infused with notions of progress and 'manifest destiny.'" In this way, Johnson explains the messy and not uncontested work of colonization and racial dominance, and she does so with an eye to the function of gender and sexuality. Clean copy.

Robert Capa: Photographs (Aperture Monograph)
by: Richard Whelan, Robert Capa , et al.

Hardcover. NY, Aperture, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages. Robert Capa: Photographs is a major retrospective of one of the century's greatest photographers. Drawing upon hundreds of previously unseen images, this collection reveals Capa as one of the great poets of the camera. In these photographs, we see the world through the eyes of a driven humanist who was also a documentarian of the highest caliber. While previous volumes on Capa have focused on his role as a war photographer, Robert Capa: Photographs shows us the remarkable range of his work: the sufferings as well as the tenderness, humor, and wonder of his subjects. The extraordinary book includes poignant comments by Capa's close friend Henri Cartier-Bresson and by Cornell Capa (Robert's younger brother and the Founding Director of the International Center of Photography), as well as a historical essay by Robert Capa biographer Richard Whelan. The dramatic collection of images in Robert Capa: Photographs shows that he captured-through the events of history-the very heart of humanity.

Robert Doisneau: From Craft to Art
by: Chevrier, Jean-Franaois

Hardcover. Germany, Steidl, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 224 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Nowhere is the breezy and urbane romance of Paris conjured as memorably as in the photography of Robert Doisneau (1912-1994). A gentle minstrel of visual anecdote, Doisneau interpreted the city's charms in an iconography that both natives and Francophiles instantly recognize: the young hip couple stealing a spontaneous kiss at a busy intersection, the gendarme chatting with a mother while her kid tiptoes along a riverbank bench, the sweetly melancholic abandoned merry-go-round in the rain and the entire pageant of Parisian life mingling at cafes, bus shelters and on the banks of the Seine. Doisneau was possessed of both lightness of touch and spontaneity, as a result of which he has been sometimes championed as a photographer of the "pure" moment. But his ocular touch is even lighter than that suggests-his images are not so much "seized" as "netted." Accompanying the Fondation Cartier-Bresson's exhibition of around 100 prints from the Doisneau estate, From Craft to Art presents these treasures alongside a new version of Jean-Francois Chevrier's classic 1983 essay on the photographer, which describes Doisneau's knack for capturing "the shining melancholy that separates an individual from the crowd.

Robert Doisneau: The Vogue Yearsby: Doisneau/Edmonde Charles-Roux, Robert

Robert Doisneau: The Vogue Years
by: Doisneau/Edmonde Charles-Roux, Robert

Hardcover. NY, Flammarion, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 360 pages. From high-society balls and fashion shoots to portraits of artists and scenes from urban life in France, this handsome volume--which features an open spine binding so that it lays flat to show off the photographs to their best advantage--showcases Doisneau's best photographs for Vogue Paris. Celebrated photographer Robert Doisneau worked for Vogue from 1949 until 1965, illustrating a postwar France filled with a renewed zest for life. His little-known images of haute couture featured models like Brigitte Bardot and Bettina, who he photographed in the studio and out on the streets. He chronicled the members of the cafe society in their stately homes and at glamorous costume galas, dancing the night away. Best known for his humanist approach, he masterfully captured scenes from everyday life--from the grace of a wedding procession over a footbridge to the petulance of a child impatient for cake. Doisneau's photographs captured the spirit of the era and featured celebrities like Karen Blixen, Picasso, Colette, and Jean Cocteau, as well as jazz musicians, movie stars, and humble craftsmen at work. Legendary Vogue editor in chief Edmonde Charles-Roux's personal homage to the photographer--who was her friend and colleague--offers intimate insight into the man behind the camera, as complex and beautiful as the people and places he immortalized.

Robert Frank: Hold Still, Keep Goingby: Ute Eskildsen, Christoph Ribbat , et al.

Robert Frank: Hold Still, Keep Going
by: Ute Eskildsen, Christoph Ribbat , et al.

Hardcover. Scalo, 1st, 2001, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 176 pages. The catalogue to Robert Frank's (born 1924) 2001 exhibition at the Museum Folkwang in Essen. Though the artist is best known for his seminal photobook The Americans (1959) and his experimental film Pull My Daisy (1959), until this publication, little scholarship existed on the intersection between Frank's work in the disciplines of photography and film. Hold Still, Keep Going fills that void, exploring the influence of film on Frank's photographic work, and the interaction between the still and moving image that has engaged the photographer and experimental filmmaker since the late 1950s. The book adopts a nonchronological approach, including photographs, film stills, 35mm filmstrips, as well as photomontages that present Frank's most famous series alongside less known work; from these varied contents, the volume offers revealing juxtapositions, rendering the seemingly disjointed arc of Frank's art more cohesive. Text, from handwritten phrases on photographs (of which "HOLD STILL-keep going" is but one example) to the dialogue in his films, emerges as a crucial tool, one that is also central to Frank's photo-diaries. Including a new essay from Tobia Bezzola, director of the Museum Folkwang, this edition highlights some of the more obscure work by perhaps the world's best-known living photographer, and is an essential addition to all photography and film collections.

Robert Indiana: Figures of Speechby: Ryan, Professor Susan Elizabeth

Robert Indiana: Figures of Speech
by: Ryan, Professor Susan Elizabeth

Hardcover. New Haven, Yale University Press, 1st, May 11, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 303 pages, illustrated throughout. Very clean and tight copy. Although lumped together with Pop artists such as Roy Liechtenstein and Andy Warhol, and often the movement's spokesperson, Indiana and his paintings actually have an uneasy fit in Pop company, mostly because his work isn't grounded in the commodity-oriented (Campbell Soup) realism of most Pop Art. Instead, his work engages with literature and poetry and with the popular rhetoric of the American dream-all permeated by the particularities of his upbringing and life. Ryan's dual accomplishments are in articulating the dynamics of Indiana's art-especially the connections between the artworks and the sources of imagery and themes in his own biography-and in rendering a sophisticated and judicious roundup of the Pop Art movement.

Robert Mapplethorpe: Black Book
by: Robert Mapplethorpe and Ntozake Shange

Softcover. NY, St Martin's Press, 3rd pr., 1988, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 9 3/4 " - 12" tall. Foreword by Ntozake Shange. 91 full-page plates in black-and-white by Robert Mapplethorpe; from the inside of the front cover: "Mapplethorpe's exquisitely printed pictures of both gay and straight males are explicit and erotic. In their use of flattering lights and lavish deep-toned printing, they openly declare their bold belief in the esthetic equality of the male as model. But Mapplethorpe's pictures ironically confirm the Kenneth Clark doctrine: despite their smart, gleaming finish, they hail the body divine in the most traditional manner--with the sexes swapped."
