East Harlem: The Postwar Years
by: Leo Goldstein, A.D. Coleman, et al.

Hardcover. NY, powerHouse Books, 1st, 2019, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. For some 70 years, Leo Goldstein's East Harlembodyof work remained mostly untouched and unseen. The silver gelatin prints were catalogued in 2016,and a selection is gathered here for the first time. The photographs were taken over a number of years, beginning in 1949 when Goldstein was a memberof the Photo League. The East Harlem corpus, edited by Regina Monfort, represents an important and unique addition to thephotographic history of New York City. Because thereare no negatives in existence, it was of particularimportance to preserve the images in book form andmake them available to the public. The selected images reflect the postwar years in theEast Harlem community, which would grow intoa center of Puerto Rican culture and life in the U.S.From the families portrayed gathering on stoops, tothe kids at their shoeshine stations, to youths playingball in the streets, to posters on neighborhood walls,Goldstein's images of East Harlem provide a windowinto the socio-economic, cultural, and politicallandscape of the time.

Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Paintingby: James Ellroy (Author), Ralph Rugoff (Author), Alexandra Schwartz (Author), Bruce Wagner (Author), more

Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting
by: James Ellroy (Author), Ralph Rugoff (Author), Alexandra Schwartz (Author), Bruce Wagner (Author), more

Hardcover. NY, D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a slipcase, 192 pages. Transforming words into icons and images into wide-screen epics, Ed Ruscha has wholly reconceived the terms of painting for our era. Tagged variously as a Conceptualist, Pop artist or latter-day Surrealist, Ruscha flouts category, or rather incorporates all categories, always surprising and experimenting with both subject and method. His paintings are steeped in our times: cinema, advertising, logos, late capitalism and the twists and turns of postwar art have all informed his iconography since the early 1960s, arriving on the cool surfaces of his canvases with magnetic detachment. Ruscha eschews process and focuses exclusively on the final product: "the means to the end has always been secondary in my art," he has said. Ruscha has also reinvented the use of words in art, finding disquieting ways to invest language with a weird, throbbing, ambient static, never aspiring to what he calls "word gestures," since "each word is an excursion unto itself." Fifty Years of Painting focuses on Ruscha's majestic oeuvre of paintings. A magnificent publication, it comes housed in a slipcase that sports the artist's classic painting "Standard Station" (1966), and, alongside fantastic reproductions, it contains a preface by novelist James Ellroy, essays by Ralph Rugoff, Alexandra Schwartz and Ulrich Wilmes, a text by novelist Bruce Wagner, an interview with the artist by Kristine McKenna, an illustrated chronology and an exhibition history.

Eden by Design: The 1930 Olmsted-Bartholomew Plan for Los Angeles Region
by: Hise, Greg, and Deverell, William F, and Olin, Laurie (Afterword by)

Softcover. Berkeley CA, University of California Press, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover. 314 pages, b&w illustrations. In 1930 the Olmsted Brothers and Harland Bartholomew & Associates submitted a report, "Parks, Playgrounds, and Beaches for the Los Angeles Region," to the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. After a day or two of coverage in the newspapers, the report dropped from sight. The plan set out a system of parks and parkways, children's playgrounds, and public beaches. It is a model of ambitious, intelligent, sensitive planning commissioned at a time when land was available, if only the city planners had had the fortitude and vision to act on its recommendations. "Parks, Playgrounds, and Beaches" has become a highly valued but difficult-to-find document. In this book, Greg Hise and William Deverell examine the reasons it was called for, analyze why it failed, and open a discussion about the future of urban public space. In addition to their introduction and a facsimile reproduction of the report, Eden by Design includes a dialogue between Hise, Deverell, and widely admired landscape architect Laurie Olin that illuminates the significance of the Olmsted-Bartholomew report and situates it in the history of American landscape planning. Edie Factory Girl
by: David Dalton and Nat Finkelstein

Hardcover. NY, VH1 Press , 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 160 pages. She was riveting to look at, a sprite of the zeitgeist, the living distillation of the over-amped vision of New York in the mid-sixties. Like many exotic creatures that Andy Warhol shed his light on, she initially bloomed--became the symbol for all that was hip and stylish--and just as quickly began to disintegrate. Told with unsparing candor, and with images that capture her at the peak of her Factory stardom, Edie Factory Girl is the short but enduring cultural story of Edie Sedgwick--releasing in time for the film of the same name starring Sienna Miller, and including rare photos of Miller as Edie.

Edie: Girl on Fire
by: Painter, Melissa and David Weisman

Hardcover. San Francisco, Chronicle Books, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 192 pages, illustrated with color, b&w photos throughout. A visual biography of Edie Sedgwick, 60's fashion and film icon. Like new in an acetate dust jacket.Model, film star, socialite, friend, lover, addict, Edie Sedgwick was the first "it" girl of the Andy Warhol Factory scene and later muse to Bob Dylan. The arc of Edie's life traced the rise and fall of the 1960s from idyllic experimentation to dissolute recklessness. After being toasted by the whole of New York City, Edie died alone of a drug overdose in California at the age of 28. David Weisman (with John Palmer) filmed Edie for the last five years of her life in his cult film Ciao! Manhattan. When he recently uncovered lost footage of Edie, David was inspired to create Edie: Girl on Fire, a book and a documentary film that explores Edie's true story. He and coauthor Melissa Painter have tracked down and interviewed many of Edie Sedgwick's surviving intimates, including Danny Fields, Baby Jane Holzer, and Ultra Violet. They also unearthed hundreds of never-before-published photos portraits, professional ad shoots, and heartbreaking snapshots of the girl who won New York's heart and nearly burned down the Chelsea hotel. The book also features a CD with Edie's last interview ever, a riveting account of a rollercoaster life.

Edith Halpert: The Downtown Gallery and the Rose of American Artby: Shaykin, Rebecca

Edith Halpert: The Downtown Gallery and the Rose of American Art
by: Shaykin, Rebecca

Hardcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, 1st, 2019, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pictorial boards, 232 pages. The question "What is American art?" might conjure the hyperrealism of Raphaelle Peale and William Harnett, the bold graphic style of Stuart Davis and Jacob Lawrence, or the Precisionist forms of Charles Sheeler. Little known, however, is that such notions of American art are significantly owed to a Russian Jewish immigrant named Edith Halpert. The founder of the Downtown Gallery in New York, Halpert shaped an identity for American art, declaring that its thrilling heterogeneity and democratic values were what most distinguished it from the European avant-garde. For forty-plus years, Halpert's gallery brought recognition and market success to now-legendary American artists--among them Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O'Keeffe, in addition to the artists mentioned above. She relentlessly championed nonwhite, female, and unknown artists and was a formative advisor in the shaping of many of the nation's most celebrated art museums and collections, from San Francisco to Boston. Not content with those achievements, she also pioneered the appreciation and collecting of American folk art. Richly illustrated with works that passed through her groundbreaking gallery, this book tells the extraordinary and largely overlooked story of her career and legacy. The artists Halpert launched into the American canon are household names--and this book compellingly argues that hers should be, as well. In publisher's shrinkwrap.

Edvard Munch: Mirror Reflections
by: Patricia G. Berman

Softcover. The Norton Gallery of Art, 1st, 1986, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 122 pages illustrated in color and b&w. Here the Norton Gallery of Arts Museum shows the exhibition of works by the distinguished Norwegian painter and printmaker Edvard Munch. For him, art must do nothing less than reveal the essential human condition. Having emerged as an accomplished Naturialist painter in the 1880s, he rejected Naturalism in his artistic manifesto of 1889-90. He began to paint images reflecting the stormy human psyche, and arranged his paintings into friezes to better communicate their meaning. At his death in 1944, his legacy included several thousand oil prints, reams of drawings, literary fragments, photographs and sculpture. Light sticker residue to front cover otherwise clean and bright.

Pictorial dust jacket. Beautiful copy. Like new. Edward Hicks (1780-1849), itinerant Quaker preacher and painter of coaches, signs and his own pictures, viewed Paine and Spinoza as devils, considered slavery a moral but not a political issue, and abhorred the temperance movement. Fifty color plates and 100 halftones show Hicks's folk renditions of William Penn, Noah's ark, David and Jonathan, along with his pastoral landscapes.
