Shoot: Photography of the Momentby: Ken Miller , Penny Martin, et al.

Shoot: Photography of the Moment
by: Ken Miller , Penny Martin, et al.

Softcover. NY, Rizzoli, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 208 pages. Shoot gathers over 20 photographers whose work focuses on capturing a moment rather than elaborate lighting setups or controlled, manufactured scenarios. Employing the most basic photographic tools--a single-lens reflex camera and natural light--they must rely on their instincts and their ability to interact with a situation to create a dynamic image. This freewheeling approach reflects an era in which we are increasingly bombarded by images, and the emotional resonance of images has become an important part of our visual vocabulary. The book documents the influence of an older generation of art photographers, such as the legendary Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans, and expands on a younger generation of photographers, including Tim Barber and J. H. Engstrom, to show how this style has gained traction and influence.

Shylock: A Legend and Its Legacyby: John Gross

Shylock: A Legend and Its Legacy
by: John Gross

Hardcover. NY, Simon & Schuster, 1st, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, A sociological look at the influence of Shakespeare's Shylock on world mythology describes the character's creation and his evolution on the stage, and presents writing about him by Proust, James, T. S. Eliot, and others. Amazingly, Shylock is in only five scenes in the Merchant of Venice. Yet, as pointed out by Gross, the theater critic for the London Sunday Telegraph , his impact and significance transcend his physical presence, so much so that his name and "pound of flesh" idea are almost universally known. In the first part of this character/cultural study, Gross examines the antecedents of Shylock and the play, and his development within the play. The second part considers "interpretations" both theatrical and literary in England and America until World War II; the third part considers Shylock more broadly as a touchstone (e.g., how his "type" is used by the Victorians--Trollope's Lopez, Dickens's Riah, Ruskin's use of him in Munera Pulveris ). Sigmar Polke: Fenster-Windows Grossmunster Zurich
by:

Softcover. Switzerland, Parkett Verlag, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Heavy paper covers in a bright color dust jacket. 209 pages, color and b&w illustrations, bilingual text - German and English. Sigmar Polke (born 1941) recently completed a series of 12 windows for the Grossmunster cathedral in Zurich, setting new standards for the mutual relationship between art and church. One group of seven Romanesque windows shows luminous mosaics of thinly sliced agate, some of it artificially colored, to produce pulsating blocks of back-lit color. Says Marina Warner, "The interior of rocks opens not only on unexpected colors... on once imprisoned now scintillating rays and gleams, but it also tunnels into the past, into the distant past of geological and cosmological millennia." For the remaining five windows, Polke designed images of figures from the Old Testament, based on medieval illuminations, which have themselves undergone transformation in the course of their long journey through time. Polke's figures now appear as radiantly contemporary icons created in colored glass, using a variety of traditional and customized techniques devised especially for this project. Minor wear to dj, lacks blue wrap-around band with title, clean copy.

Sigmund Freud and Hypnosis: The Interaction of Psychoanalysis & Hypnosis by: Kline, Milton

Sigmund Freud and Hypnosis: The Interaction of Psychoanalysis & Hypnosis
by: Kline, Milton

Hardcover. NY, Julian Press, 1st, 1958, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 207 pages. Black cloth with gilt lettering on spine, decorative device on front cover. According to his biographers, Freud was not comfortable in making hand passes and touching the subject, which were the (limited) techniques available at the end of the 19th century. Freud studied with Charcot and Bernheim (the two schools of thought which conflicted with each other), but later gave hypnosis up in favor of his free association technique. This book begins by discussing the reasons Freud did that. It states that Freud at the end of life regretting not using hypnosis more. His followers balked at hypnosis, erroneously believing the cures were temporary since the ego was being bypassed (and their theoretical beliefs required the ego to be the agent). But this book reveals that Freud did not abandon hypnosis for the reasons commonly thought, and so it is essential reading for all students of Freud. The second part of the book goes into commentary on hypnosis in theory and practice. Small ink doodle to front fly leaf, otherwise clean.

Signs of Lifeby: Sekaer, Peter

Signs of Life
by: Sekaer, Peter

Hardcover. GR, Steidl, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 200 pages. Peter Sekaer (1901-50) emerged as an artist in the company of Ben Shahn, Berenice Abbott, and Walker Evans. This book intends to show how he stepped from their benign shadows to build his own distinctive style. It is the first monograph to show the full range of his accomplishments. Sekaer's early work combines dispassionate images with others that show his concern and intuitive grasp of the human condition. Many of his most memorable photographs were made while fulfilling mundane assignments for various government agencies. Sekaer had none of the reformer's passion found in the works of Jacob Riis or Lewis Hine. His stance was more that of the artist/anthropologist, who delighted in recording the artifacts and gestures that defined American society in the 1930s.

Hardcover. New York, Arthur A. Levine Books, 1st, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 64 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, unmarked copy with only minor edgwear. Color illustrations by Allen Say. Tight copy. Caldecott Medal winner Allen Say brings his lavish illustrations and hybrid narrative and artistic styles to the story of artist James Castle. James Castle was born two months premature on September 25, 1899, on a farm in Garden Valley, Idaho. He was deaf, mute, autistic, and probably dyslexic. He didn't walk until he was four; he would never learn to speak, write, read, or use sign language. Yet, today Castle's artwork hangs in major museums throughout the world. The Philadelphia Museum of Art opened "James Castle: A Retrospective" in 2008. The 2013 Venice Biennale included eleven works by Castle in the feature exhibition "The Encyclopedic Palace." And his reputation continues to grow. Caldecott Medal winner Allen Say, author of the acclaimed memoir Drawing from Memory, takes readers through an imagined look at Castle's childhood, allows them to experience his emergence as an artist despite the overwhelming difficulties he faced, and ultimately reveals the triumphs that he would go on to achieve.

Sinan:Architect of Suleyman the Magnificent and the Ottoman Golden Age
by: Freely, John; Burelli, Augusto Romano

Hardcover. London, Thames and Hudson, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 144 pages, Color photos by Ara Guller. Sinan was the greatest architect of the Ottoman Golden Age of the sixteenth century when the Ottoman Empire reached its zenith of power and magnificence. His style marks the apogee of Turkish art. Under Sleyman the Magnificent and his succcessor Selmi II, Sinan designed hundreds of buildings: mosques, palaces, tombs, mausolea, hospitals, schools, caravanserai, bridges, aqueducts and baths, many of them presented and analysed in this book. In his greatest works, he adapted Byzantine and Islamic styles to produce something quite new: a centralized organization of absolute space unhindered by pillars or columns and covered by a soaring dome. An architect of genius in a dynamic new empire expanding into both Asia and Europe, he was a true man of the Renaissance. Clean, bright copy.

Sinatra: An Intimate Collectionby: Willoughby, Bob

Sinatra: An Intimate Collection
by: Willoughby, Bob

Softcover. London, Vision On, 1st, 2002, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 208 pages of b&w and color photos. Willoughby became one of the very few photographers to capture not only the charm, charisma and dangerous cool of Sinatra the untouchable "Chairman of the Board", but also the tenderness and fragility of Frankie the father, the friend and human being. Beginning on the set of his Oscar-winning portrayal of Maggio in From Here To Eternity, through to the heady, hard-drinking razzmatazz of the Rat Pack's Las Vegas residency to film the original Ocean's 11, Tilloughby's beautifully collated portfolio includes stolen moments between Sinatra and a host of his friends and costars, including Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Shirley MacLaine and Judy Garland. Elsewhere in the book we see Sinatra negotiating with film producers, hanging with fellow Rats, giving it the irresistible "Old Blue-Eyes" whammy to Kim Novak and Juliet Prowse, turning on the magic on stage and enjoying quiet moments at home with his daughter Nancy. And while many of the images have become classics and will be familiar to even the most casual admirers, more still previously unpublished glimpses of Sinatra's turbulent life. Put together, they represent the most illuminating insights into the heydey of the Hoboken player ever printed. Clean copy.

Sir Arthur Pinero: A Critical Biography with Lettersby: Dunkel, Wilbur Dwight

Sir Arthur Pinero: A Critical Biography with Letters
by: Dunkel, Wilbur Dwight

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1st, 1941, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcovrt in a lightly worn dust jacket, 141 pages. Frontis photo of Pinero. Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (24 May 1855 - 23 November 1934) was an English actor and later an important dramatist and stage director. He became a prolific and successful playwright, authoring fifty-nine plays. These include serious social dramas, some dealing with social hypocrisy surrounding attitudes to women in second marriages. 'Pinero's talent was stagecraft. He knew how to organize material for effective presentation on the stage. He understood the mass psychology, the emotional reaction of the group in the theater, and thought little of the individual reader. As a result, the dialogue in his plays is right for the actor and the audience, but disconcerting to the readers. But in particular, Pinero was the master of suspense, motivating the turns in his plot sequence with unerring skill. For he understood stage business, the timinng of motion and sound, and, above all, the reactions of an audience to the physical properties on the stage itself. ' Clean copy.
