Murray Talks Music: Albert Murray on Jazz and Bluesby: Albert Murray, Paul Devlin, et al.

Murray Talks Music: Albert Murray on Jazz and Blues
by: Albert Murray, Paul Devlin, et al.

Hardcover. Minneapolis, University Of Minnesota Press, 1st, 2016, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. The year 2016 will mark the centennial of the birth of Albert Murray (1916-2013), who in thirteen books was by turns a lyrical novelist, a keen and iconoclastic social critic, and a formidable interpreter of jazz and blues. Not only did his prizewinning study Stomping the Blues (1976) influence musicians far and wide, it was also a foundational text for Jazz at Lincoln Center, which he cofounded with Wynton Marsalis and others in 1987. Murray Talks Music brings together, for the first time, many of Murray's finest interviews and essays on music--most never before published--as well as rare liner notes and prefaces. For those new to Murray, this book will be a perfect introduction, and those familiar with his work--even scholars--will be surprised, dazzled, and delighted. Highlights include Dizzy Gillespie's richly substantive 1985 conversation; an in-depth 1994 dialogue on jazz and culture between Murray and Wynton Marsalis; and a long 1989 discussion on Duke Ellington between Murray, Stanley Crouch, and Loren Schoenberg. Also interviewed by Murray are producer and impresario John Hammond and singer and bandleader Billy Eckstine. All of thse conversations were previously lost to history. A celebrated educator and raconteur, Murray engages with a variety of scholars and journalists while making insightful connections among music, literature, and other art forms--all with ample humor and from unforeseen angles.

The influence of traditional and religious groups on modern politics. The author investigates the political role of religious organizations in the West African country of Senegal. She also shows that, although the Muslim leaders occupy such a privileged position in Senegalese society, they do not actually control the government, which issecularand modern in form and is led by Western-educated men devoted to a program of industrialization and agricultural and social reform. My Captain America: A Granddaughter's Memoir of a Legendary Comic Book Artistby: Megan Margulies

My Captain America: A Granddaughter's Memoir of a Legendary Comic Book Artist
by: Megan Margulies

Hardcover. NY, Pegasus Books, 1st, 2020, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 242 pages. A finely wrought coming-of-age memoir about the author's relationship with her beloved grandfather Joe Simon, cartoonist and co-creator of Captain America. In the 1990s, Megan Margulies's Upper West Side neighborhood was marked by addicts shooting up in subway stations, frequent burglaries, and the "Wild Man of 96th Street," who set fires under cars and heaved rocks through stained glass church windows. The world inside her parents' tiny one-bedroom apartment was hardly a respite, with a family of five-including some loud personalities-eventually occupying the 550-square-foot space. Salvation arrived in the form of her spirited grandfather, Daddy Joe, whose midtown studio became a second home to Megan. There, he listened to her woes, fed her Hungry Man frozen dinners, and simply let her be. His living room may have been dominated by the drawing table, notes, and doodles that marked him as Joe Simon the cartoonist. But for Megan, he was always Daddy Joe: an escape from her increasingly hectic home, a nonjudgmental voice whose sense of humor was as dry as his farfel, and a steady presence in a world that felt off balance. Evoking New York City both in the 1980s and '90s and during the Golden Age of comics in the 1930s and '40s, My Captain America flashes back from Megan's story to chart the life and career of Rochester-native Joe Simon, from his early days retouching publicity photos and doing spot art for magazines, to his partnership with Jack Kirby at Timely Comics (the forerunner of Marvel Comics), which resulted in the creation of beloved characters like Captain America, the Boy Commandos, and Fighting American. My Captain America offers a tender and sharply observed account of Megan's life with Daddy Joe-and an intimate portrait of the creative genius who gave us one of the most enduring superheroes of all time.

My Last Sigh: The Autobiography of Luis Bunuel
by: Bunuel, Luis

Softcover. NY, Vintage, reprint, 1984, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 256 pages, b&w photos. Clean copy. A provocative memoir from Luis Bunuel, the Academy Award winning creator of some of modern cinema's most important films, from Un Chien Andalou to The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Luis Bunuel's films have the power to shock, inspire, and reinvent our world. Now, in a memoir that carries all the surrealism and subversion of his cinema, Bunuel turns his artistic gaze inward. In swift and generous prose, Bunuel traces the surprising contours of his life, from the Good Friday drumbeats of his childhood to the dreams that inspired his most famous films to his turbulent friendships with Federico Garcia Lorca and Salvador Dali. His personal narratives also encompass the pressing political issues of his time, many of which still haunt us today--the specter of fascism, the culture wars, the nuclear bomb. Filled with film trivia, framed by Bunuel's intellect and wit, this is essential reading for fans of cinema and for anyone who has ever wanted to see the world through a surrealist's eyes.

My Mississippiby: Willie Morris (Author), David Rae Morris (Photographer)

My Mississippi
by: Willie Morris (Author), David Rae Morris (Photographer)

Hardcover. University Press of Mississippi, 1st, 2000, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, text by Morris, color photos by David Rae Morris. The author's last book, written in his characteristically limpid, lyrical prose, offers a heartfelt appreciation of his home state, a place often dismissed as poor and backward by "outlanders," Morris' term for non-Mississippians. This is not a defensive recitation of Mississippi's virtues nor is it a whitewash of its less-than-attractive features. First, Morris wants the reader to understand the state's beauty--"physically beautiful in the most fundamental and indwelling way, [in that] it never leaves you." Then, with both pride and understanding, he brings into sharp focus Mississippi's peculiar tensions and ambivalence and also its passions--"we are a singular people," he says of his native folk. The second half of the book is an album of full-color photographs taken by Morris' son, a professional photojournalist. These shots informally capture ordinary moments in the lives of Mississippians, from a young couple standing next to their truck with their new baby in their arms to a group of local citizens hanging out in front of the main store in a small town. Together, the text and the photographs showcase Mississippians doing what they do best--being themselves completely without artifice. Clean copy.

Naked Lens: Beat Cinemaby: Sargeant, Jack

Naked Lens: Beat Cinema
by: Sargeant, Jack

Softcover. London, Creation Books, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 250 pages. Celebrating the celluloid expression of the Beat spirit--arguably the most sustained legacy in U.S. counterculture--Naked Lens is a comprehensive study of the most significant interfaces between the Beat writers, Beat culture, and cinema. Naked Lens features key Beat players and their collaborators, including William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, Brion Gysin, Antony Balch, Ron Rice, John Cassavetes, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Klaus Maeck, and Gus van Sant. As well as examining clearly Beat-inspired films such as Pull My Daisy, Chappaqua, and The Flower Thief, Jack Sargeant discusses cinema verite and performance films (Shadows and Wholly Communion), B-movies (The Subterraneans and Roger Corman's Bucket of Blood), and Hollywood adaptations (Heart Beat and Barfly). The second half of the book is devoted to an extensive analysis of the films relating to William Burroughs, from Antony Balch's Towers Open Fire to David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch. This book also contains the last ever interview with writer Allen Ginsberg, recorded three months before his death in April 1997.

Naked Shoe, The: The Artistry of Mabel Julianelliby: Julianelli, Jane

Naked Shoe, The: The Artistry of Mabel Julianelli
by: Julianelli, Jane

Hardcover. US, Antique Collectors Club , 1st, 2010, Book: Near Fine, Dust Jacket: Near Fine, Like new in publishers shrink-wrap. Hardcover, 240 pages, mostly bw photos, some color. This book depicts, both in pictures and biographical text, the life and work of Mabel Julianelli, starting as a pattern designer in Brooklyn, NY. Beginning with her student years studying commercial art at Pratt Institute in the 1920s, and spanning her 40-plus year career, Mabel Julianelli, with her husband and partner Charles Julianelli, is credited with many constructional, interpretative, and fashion firsts. Her 1950 Coty Award-winning naked evening sandal, which had versions into the 1960s and 1970, is vital today due to the resurgence of ballroom dancing (i.e. 'Dancing With The Stars'): a style Mabel Julianelli first designed at a time when nobody wore sandals as evening wear. Mabel Julianelli's 1940s wedge sandal patent was referenced by Nike, Inc. in the 1990s and her shoe designs and ornaments were referenced by Jimmy Choo Ltd. in 2004-2006, among others. Her forte was the wearable, comfortable construction of shoes so it is no wonder that today's shoe companies have referenced her 1940s patents.

Naked Truth: Approachers to the Body in Early-twentieth-Century German-Austrian Artby: Matthias, Bettina

Naked Truth: Approachers to the Body in Early-twentieth-Century German-Austrian Art
by: Matthias, Bettina

Softcover. Middlebury, VT, Middlebury College Museum of Art, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 111 pages. Softcover with paper wrappers. Color pictures throughout. In 1899 Gustav Klimt's painting Nuda Veritas shook up the Austrian public with what many deem to be the painter's most political exploration of the nude female body. Klimt's provocative allegory challenged viewers to consider their own beliefs about the relationship between the nude (female) body and contemporary morality; this "naked truth" was shocking. Transcending accusations of pornography, Klimt's work paved the way for artistic examinations of the nude body as the site through which questions of freedom, desire, beauty, nature, culture, power, and their antonyms could be represented and negotiated. Taking these ideas as one critical point of departure, this volume and the accompanying exhibition feature selected prints, drawings, and watercolors by Klimt, Egon Schiele, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Max Beckmann and Kathe Kollwitz, among others. It explores the conceptions of the human body and the manner of its visualization in the period leading up to and following the First World War, which changed the world's notions of flesh and blood forever.
