Isaac Julien: True North Fantome Afrique
by: Anthony Appiah, Eveline Bernasconi, Lisa Bloom, Mark Nash, Cristina Albu, Isaac Julien, Veit Gorner (Foreword)

Hardcover. Germany, Hatje Cantz, 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 80 pages, photos in color. Minor shelf-wear to boards, else a clean, tight copy. This book documents the two most recent works by the critically acclaimed British artist and filmmaker, Isaac Julien, both of which continue his investigation of issues of race and global politics. True North, shot in the spectacular landscapes of Iceland and Northern Sweden, is conceived around the expedition writings of the African-American explorer Matthew Henson, one of the key members of Robert E. Peary's 1909 Arctic expedition, and arguably the first person to reach the North Pole. True North's diametric counterpart, Fantome Afrique, weaves cinematic and architectural references through the rich imagery of urban Ouagadougou, Africa's cinematic center, and the arid spaces of rural Burkina Faso. The film is punctuated by archival footage from early colonial expeditions and landmark moments in African history.

Istanbul (Deluxe Edition): Memories and the City by: Pamuk, Orhan

Istanbul (Deluxe Edition): Memories and the City
by: Pamuk, Orhan

Hardcover. NY, Alfred A. Knopf, 1st thus, 2017, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. An evocative portrait of a great and storied city, an elegy for a bygone civilization, and a meditation on the "complicated intimacies" (Pamuk's phrase) of life itself. "Spins a masterful tale, moving from his fractured extended family, all living in a communal apartment building, out into the city and encompassing the entire Ottoman Empire. Pamuk sees the slow collapse of the once powerful empire hanging like a pall over the city and its citizens. Central to many Istanbul residents' character is the concept of huzun ('melancholy'). Istanbul's huzun, Pamuk writes, 'is a way of looking at life that is ultimately as life-affirming as it is negating'. A powerful, disturbing literary journey through the soul of a great city, told by one of its great writers". This is the Deluxe Edition with 439 photos and illustrations. Bright, clean copy.

J.C. Leyendecker: American Imagistby: Laurence Cutler and Judy Goffman Cutler

J.C. Leyendecker: American Imagist
by: Laurence Cutler and Judy Goffman Cutler

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 256 pages. One of the most prolific and successful artists of the Golden Age of American Illustration, J. C. Leyendecker captivated audiences throughout the first half of the 20th century. Leyendecker is best known for his creation of the archetype of the fashionable American male with his advertisements for Arrow Collar. These images sold to an eager public the idea of a glamorous lifestyle, the bedrock upon which modern advertising was built. He also was the creator instantly recognizable icons, such as the New Year's baby and Santa Claus, that are to this day an integral part of the lexicon of Americana and was commissioned to paint more Saturday Evening Post covers than any other artist. Leyendecker lived for most of his adult life with Charles Beach, the Arrow Collar Man, on whom the stylish men in his artwork were modeled. The first book about the artist in more than 30 years, J. C. Leyendecker features his masterworks, rare paintings, studies, and other artwork, including the 322 covers he did for the Post. With a revealing text that delves into both his artistic evolution and personal life, J. C. Leyendecker restores this iconic image maker's rightful position in the pantheon of great American artists.

Jack Cole's Deadly Horror: The Chilling Archives of Horror Volume 4by: Cole, Jack

Jack Cole's Deadly Horror: The Chilling Archives of Horror Volume 4
by: Cole, Jack

Hardcover. US, IDW Publishing, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Hardcover issued w/o a dust jacket. Jack Cole's often overlooked horror work finally gets the hardcover treatment. The stories hit many of the usual horror themes, and a few unique ones, with many based in the crime genre. Cole brings his own outlook to the idiom; casually violent and gruesome, with kinetic artwork and splash panels/pages that will knock your socks off. Offered chronologically, the earlier stories outshine most of the later ones. The best ones are "borrowed" from a couple of "Weird Tales" authors- "Custodian of the Dead" (Henry Kuttner's "Graveyard Rats") and "The Corpse That Wouldn't Die" (Clark Ashton Smith's "The Return of the Sorcerer"). Cole's own stories are pretty original, compared to the mostly ho-hum output of contemporaries like Stan Lee's ATLAS line, and he doesn't try to imitate the EC horror comics like 99% of the rest of the field did. Some of the stories are ludicrous and will make you roll your eyes ("Goddess of Murder" especially), but it's refreshing to see a different take on the comic book horror story.

by: Tom Scioli

Hardcover. NY, Ten Speed Press, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover in pictorial boards, no dust jacket issued, 201 pages. Critically acclaimed graphic novelist Tom Scioli breathes visual life into Kirby's life story--from his days growing up in New York during the Great Depression and discovering a love for science fiction and cartoons to his time on the frontlines in the European theatre of World War II where he experienced the type of action and adventure he'd later imbue his comic pages with, and on to his world-changing collaborations at Marvel with Stan Lee, where the pair redefined comics as a part of pop culture.

Jackson Pollock: Energy Made Visible
by: B. H. Friedman

Hardcover. NY, McGraw-Hill, 1st, 1972, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a price-clipped dust jacket with light wear, 293 pages, b&w illustrations. Nowhere is the complex and destructive painter Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) revealed with more compassion and insight than in this exemplary biography. Friedman, a friend of Pollock's and active in the art world, shows him to be a brilliant man tormented by his relationship to his family; an artist who worked hard through years of poverty to achieve his controversial painting technique; the first American painter to gain an international reputation for himself and for what has been variously called Action Painting or Abstract Expressionism; and a man who struggled with alcohol and the tension between gentleness and violence. Light tape repair to dust jacket on reverse. Otherwise clean.

Jackson Pollock: Energy Made Visible
by: Friedman, B.H.

Hardcover. NY, McGraw-Hill , 1st, 1972, Book: Very Good, Hardcover, 293 pages, b&w photographs. Edge wear, small tears to dust jacket. Dark blue top edge decorative stain w/ light spots, else a very clean, tight copy. Nowhere is the complex and destructive painter Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) revealed with more compassion and insight than in this exemplary biography. Friedman, a friend of Pollock's and active in the art world, shows him to be a brilliant man tormented by his relationship to his family; an artist who worked hard through years of poverty to achieve his controversial painting technique; the first American painter to gain an international reputation for himself and for what has been variously called Action Painting or Abstract Expressionism; and a man who struggled with alcohol and the tension between gentleness and violence.Newly illustrated with seminal Pollock paintings, this book takes the reader inside the art world of New York during the '40s and '50s, when Action Painting first emerged. Friedman reveals what it meant to Pollock to experience the invasion of his studio and of the very act of painting by the external pressures of shows, reviews, films, dealers, critics, hostile publicity; and how, despite it all, Pollock created many of the most graceful and powerful paintings ever made in America.
