Labeling America: Popular Culture on Cigar Box Labels: The Story of George Schlegel Lithographers, 1849-1971 by: Grossman, John

Labeling America: Popular Culture on Cigar Box Labels: The Story of George Schlegel Lithographers, 1849-1971
by: Grossman, John

Hardcover. East Petersburg PA, Fox Chapel Publishing, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. Cigar box labels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were not only amusing and beautiful to admire, they were a testament to the printing process of chromolithography and an important precursor to today's methods of product advertising. Labeling America: Popular Culture on Cigar Box Labels showcases the unique collection of John Grossman which covers 90 years of cigar box labels and bands printed by four generations of George Schlegel Lithographers. What makes this archive unique is that the Schlegel Company kept meticulous sample albums and files showing an unbroken record of American graphic style evolution. The work of many other lithographers of that era either destroyed or irreversibly dispersed their work. Now housed at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, the carefully cataloged Grossman collection gives a glimpse into life at the turn of the century, when over 5 billion cigars were being sold in the United States via boxes with colorful labels depicting everything from women, animals, and sports icons to actors, heroes, and political figures. This book takes these beautifully printed slices of American culture and combines them with the history of chromolithography into an interesting story of America's changing tastes. Clean, bright copy.

Landlords and Strangers: Ecology, Society, and Trade in Western Africa, 1000-1630 by: Brooks, George E.

Landlords and Strangers: Ecology, Society, and Trade in Western Africa, 1000-1630
by: Brooks, George E.

Softcover. Boulder CO, Westview Press , 1st US, 1993, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 360 pages. B&w illustrations. The period 1000 to 1630 was the most dynamic era in the history of the Mande- and West Atlantic-speaking peoples living between the bend of the Niger River and the Atlantic littoral. Many of the economic, social, and cultural patterns that evolved during those centuries remain of fundamental importance. This study delineates historical processes in the context of climate change, expanding trade networks, and widespread state-building. The long dry period, c. 1100-c. 1500, impelled Mande-speaking traders and blacksmiths to move progressively southward and westward, founding chapters of Mande "power associations" among host communities. Smiths and traders were followed by horse warriors who founded conquest states and imposed a tripartite social stratification. During the brief c. 1500-c. 1630 wet period, the southward movement of horse warriors was temporarily checked, but Europeans and Eur-Africans promoted an expanding trade in slaves that ravaged the peoples of western Africa during the centuries following. Landlords and Strangers provides a comprehensive synthesis of documentary and oral data and includes numerous extracts from contemporaneous sources to vividly portray the peoples and lands of western Africa.

Landscape Beyond: A Journey into Photographyby: David Ward

Landscape Beyond: A Journey into Photography
by: David Ward

Softcover. Argentum, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 126 pages in color. Critically acclaimed photographer David Ward explores the essential attributes of a successful landscape photograph--simplicity, ambiguity, and beauty--in this intriguing companion to his first book, Landscape Within. David discusses how the notion of beauty has been viewed by artists and psychologists and how, despite various modifications over the centuries, the concept of beauty remains relevant. David suggests that all photographers' work either poses a question or seeks to impose the photographer's viewpoint, and he goes on to investigate how photography affects our interpretation of the world around us. Accompanied by a selection of David's stunning, large-format landscape images, this is an elegant and insightful look into the nature of photography. Clean copy.

Landscapes for the People: George Alexander Grant, First Chief Photographer of the National Park Service
by: Ren Davis (Author), Helen Davis (Author), Timothy Davis (F

Hardcover. Athens GA, University of Georgia Press, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 254 pages, b&w illustrations. George Alexander Grant is an unknown elder in the field of American landscape photography. Just as they did the work of his contemporaries Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Eliot Porter, and others, millions of people viewed Grant's photographs; unlike those contemporaries, few even knew Grant's name. Landscapes for the People shares his story through his remarkable images and a compelling biography profiling patience, perseverance, dedication, and an unsurpassed love of the natural and historic places that Americans chose to preserve. A Pennsylvania native, Grant was introduced to the parks during the summer of 1922 and resolved to make parks work and photography his life. Seven years later, he received his dream job and spent the next quarter century visiting the four corners of the country to produce images in more than one hundred national parks, monuments, historic sites, battlefields, and other locations. He was there to visually document the dramatic expansion of the National Park Service during the New Deal, including the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Grant's images are the work of a master craftsman. His practiced eye for composition and exposure and his patience to capture subjects in their finest light are comparable to those of his more widely known contemporaries. Nearly fifty years after his death, and in concert with the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service, it is fitting that George Grant's photography be introduced to a new generation of Americans.

Softcover. New Haven CT, Yale University Press, reprint, 1998, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 426 pages. How do we evaluate the power and utility of language when it has been made to articulate falsehoods in certain totalitarian regimes or has been charged with vulgarity and imprecision in a mass-consumer democracy? How will language react to the increasingly urgent claims of more exact speech such as mathematics and symbolic notation? These are some of the questions Steiner addresses in this elegantly written book, first published in 1967 to international acclaim. Clean, bright copy.

Softcover. NY, Phaidon Press, 1st, 2005, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 128 pages, 55 photos. Growing up on Long Island in New York, Larry Fink was disinterested in the consumer-driven culture of 1950s' America. A disaffected teenager, his parents transferred him to art school where his career as a photographer began to flourish. His parents were supportive of his interest in the arts, and Fink would later drop out of college to join a circle of artists living in Greenwich Village. Fink spent the 1960s watching and learning from the prominent photographers of the time: Henri Cartier- Bresson, Robert Frank, W. by: Christopher Knight

Hardcover. Los Angeles, Art Issues Press, 1st, 1995, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 420 pages with index. Christopher Knight is the unprecedented five-time winner of the Chemical Bank Award for Distinguished Newspaper Art Criticism, and was a finalist for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize in criticism. Among the 129 essays and reviews collected here are individual writings on internationally important historical figures, such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Tung Ch'i Ch'ang, and douard Manet; contemporary American masters like Edward Ruscha and Mike Kelley; and significant artists virtually forgotten today, such as California's Henrietta Shore and Mexico's Hermenegildo Bustos. Last Laughs: Cartoons About Aging, Retirement...and the Great Beyond by: Mort Gerberg (Editor)

Last Laughs: Cartoons About Aging, Retirement...and the Great Beyond
by: Mort Gerberg (Editor)

Hardcover. NY, Scribner, 1st, 2007, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, Twenty-six New Yorker cartoonists take on aging, retirement, death and the Great Beyond. George Booth, Edward Koren, Marisa Acocella Marchetto (creator of Cancer Vixen) and Gahan Wilson are among those confronting the Reaper. Some cartoons in the book have previously appeared in the New Yorker, but most are originals. Contributors range in age from their 30s to the 90-year-old Frank Modell. Various cartoons deal with the shock of baby boomers as their old age looms: Roz Chast depicts the body with a mind of its own, aging despite its owner's wishes; J.B. Handelsman draws an executive telling an older worker that the company encourages certain employees to die. But many of the cartoons celebrate the continuing vitality of seniors, such as Lee Lorenz's female astronaut who will be the first Gray Panther to walk on the moon. The hooded Grim Reaper is a continuing presence, but many cartoons are set in heaven or hell. In the back of the book, most of the contributors say who they would like to meet in the Great Beyond. In this life-affirming collection, even death can't halt the momentum of the human comedy. Clean copy.
