by: Bruce Foster; Vernon Wright

Hardcover. Wellington NZ, Listener, 1st, 1983, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 159 pages in color. This book is the record of a personal journey by two men, a writer and a photographer, into the rural heartland of New Zealand. covers musters in Glenray Station deep in the high back country of Southland. From that experience grew the idea of taking part in different kinds of sheep and cattle musters throughout N.z. from the rivers of Westland to the dunes of Northland, from the remote east coast to the South Island's vast Molesworth Station. The idea was to capture the glory of these uniquely NZ farming adventures which had already endured intact for 100 years, before inevitable changes in landscape and methods. This book is a feast of back-country colour and action which you will never ever get to see unless invited along. Mild tanning to dust jacket at top and bottom edge. Otherwise clean and bright.

Stories of Richard Bausch, The
by: Bausch, Richard

Hardcover. NY, HarperCollins, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 651 pages. Clean, tight copy. Few writers of the past quarter-century have so consistently surprised, startled, and delighted their readers as has the masterful Richard Bausch, whom the Washington Post Book World calls "a virtuoso of language and literary grace." His nine critically acclaimed novels have established him as one of the most important fiction writers of his generation, a visionary stylist with an acute eye for the minute detail that illuminates the deepest wells of human experience. Yet it is for his award-winning short fiction that Bausch is perhaps most admired. The Stories of Richard Bausch celebrates the work of a great American artist, a writer the New York Times calls "a master of the short story." By turns tender, raw, heartbreaking, and riotously funny, the many voices of this definitive forty-two-story collection (seven of which appear here for the first time) defy expectation, attest to Bausch's remarkable range and versatility, and affirm his place alongside such acclaimed story writers as John Cheever, Flannery O'Connor, Raymond Carver, and Grace Paley.

Straight Man by: Russo, Richard

Straight Man
by: Russo, Richard

Hardcover. NY, Random House, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 391 pages. Attractive copy of the fourth novel by Pulitzer Prize winner, Richard Russo. William Henry Devereaux, Jr., spiritually suited to playing left field but forced by a bad hamstring to try first base, is the unlikely chairman of the English department at West Central Pennsylvania University. Over the course of a single convoluted week, he threatens to execute a duck, has his nose slashed by a feminist poet, discovers that his secretary writes better fiction than he does, suspects his wife of having an affair with his dean, and finally confronts his philandering elderly father, the one-time king of American Literary Theory, at an abandoned amusement park. Such is the canvas of Richard Russo's Straight Man, a novel of surpassing wit, poignancy, and insight. As he established in his previous books Russo is unique among contemporary authors for his ability to flawlessly capture the soul of the wise guy and the heart of a difficult parent. In Hank Devereaux, Russo has created a hero whose humor and identification with the absurd are mitigated only by his love for his family, friends, and, ultimately, knowledge itself. Clean copy.

by: Ditko/Blake Bell, Steve

Hardcover. Seattle, Fantagraphics Books, 1st, 2009, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, pages. Before Spider-Man, the legendary comic-book artist Steve Ditko drew horror comics that were not yet hobbled by the Comics Code Authority (adopted in Oct. '54). Softcover. London, Tate Publishing, 1st, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 224 pages. The street allows photographers to conceal cameras and catch subjects unaware, in informal settings. By contrast, the studio permits both photographers and subjects to present carefully composed images to the world through elaborate staging and technical tricks. In recent years, with celebrities posing in the street and the studio being used for more informal, intimate shots, both traditions have undergone a transformation. This stunning collection features many of the greatest street hotographers of all time--Atget, Brassai, Cartier-Bresson, Arbus, Frank, as well as studio-based artists such as Carlo Ponti, Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Jurgen Teller.

Streetcar Advertising in Americaby: Woodson J. Savage III

Streetcar Advertising in America
by: Woodson J. Savage III

Hardcover. Croydon UK, Fonthill Media, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 160 pages. You might be surprised to learn that many of the consumer brands and products we enjoy today exist because of streetcar advertising. The Industrial Revolution of the early 1900's and a massive consumer audience riding over 50,000 streetcars in nearly 3,000 cities and towns in every state of the union provided a great opportunity for Barron Collier, a native of Memphis, Tennessee. He simply used streetcar advertising to bring these two forces together and created the largest streetcar advertising empire in the world. By age twenty-six, he was a millionaire and at one time had business offices in 70 cities with business interests in more than a thousand cities. Most of these advertising cards have remarkable color graphics; over 250 of them are included in this book for your viewing pleasure. While streetcar advertising is definitely not a major advertising medium today, the advertising community might be surprised to learn that the basic principles of consumer advertising have not changed that much in the last one hundred years. Investors might do well to review this book to see which companies are still producing these popular products and brands as they represent some of the most successful businesses in America today.

Striptease Artists of the 1950s
by: Bunny Yeager

Softcover. Atglen PA, Schiffer Books, 2008, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 160 pages, b&w photos throughout. Here are the ladies who pioneered and perfected the art of titillating performance in the 1950s, as captured by famous female photographer and pin-up girl Bunny Yeager. Celebrities shown include Dixie Evans, Blaze Starr, Bonnie Bell, Michelle Toots LAmour, and Kitten DeVille, and Lana Loy. These women practiced the art of teasing with varying and increasing degrees of nudity, and were billed under many monikers, including stripper, exotic or erotic dancer, burlesque queen, and stripteuse. Though most strip clubs have abandoned the delayed gratification of teasing in recent decades, the art of striptease is undergoing revival. Yeagers images embody the mix of sultry and playful that characterized the art during the 1950s. Here famous subjects pose in the spotlight amidst smoky nightclubs, as well as at home or relaxing on the beach. If you love women, youll love this journey back into the era of the 1950s.

Striptease is the history of unapologetic fun aimed not at the head, not at the heart or even the stomach, but south of all three. Beginning with the birth of the striptease in the mid-19th century and culminating with its garish heyday in the 1950s, this book charts the evolution of the infamous bump and grind, which is, at its simplest, a pretty girl in a pretty dress ... and then not. The only fully illustrated book available on the subject, Striptease tells the history of this provocative form of stagecraft from its birth in vaudeville and burlesque through the "take it all off" attitude for which the term "striptease" was coined. Along the way, the book highlights such performers as Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, Maud Allen, Gypsy Rose Lee, Tempest Storm, and Blaze Starr. The witty and well-informed text is illustrated with an array of titillating images, including never-before-published ephemera and illicitly photographed performances in progress. Whether revealing ankles or breasts, playing peek-a-boo or going the full monty, Striptease pays tribute to the women who made a vocation of their sex appeal and shimmied their way into American culture.

by: Goldman, Jean

Hardcover. Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, 1st, 2014, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, 199 pages. Hardcover with dust jacket. Very clean, like new in publishers shrink-wrap. This catalogue presents 59 masterful Italian drawings from the late 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries: working drawings, preparatory sketches, and finished compositions that have been added in recent years to the private collection of Jean and Steven Goldman. In her essays, Jean Goldman assesses the collection within the context of Mannerism and the role of drawing in the business of art. She and Nicolas Schwed coauthor detailed entries on the works' attributions, subjects, and functions, complete with documentation including provenance, bibliography, exhibition history, and comparative illustrations. The catalogue presents the work of more than forty artists, some of whom, such as Giorgio Vasari and Pietro da Cortona, were major figures, and others who were virtually unknown. Together, these magnificent works trace the rise and evolution of Mannerism in Italy.

Stuart Davis
by: Sweeney, James Johnson

Hardcover. NY, Museum of Modern Art, 1st, 1945, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a lightly worn dust jacket with tanning to edges, 40 pages. 3 color, 28 b&w plates. Considers the life and work of American modernist Stuart Davis. (1892-1964) "Offers an informal account of Davis' career from its precocious beginning in the school of Robert Henri as a follower of The Eight through the impact of the Armory Show and the subsequent evolution of his work. The text is unique in that the artist, as far as possible, speaks for himself. James Johnson Sweeney has skillfully interwoven Davis' own terse and lively talk of pictures, places, people and esthetic theory with a running narrative and critical commentary."

Stuart Davis: In Full Swingby: Cooper, Harry

Stuart Davis: In Full Swing
by: Cooper, Harry

Hardcover. Washington, Prestel, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 288 pages. Softcover. Very clean, like new in publishers shrink-wrap. This book pays tribute to the mature work of Stuart Davis, a distinctly American artist who adapted European modernism to reflect the sights, sounds, and rhythms of popular culture. Beginning in 1921, a series of creative breakthroughs led Davis away from figurative painting and toward a more abstract expression of the world he inhabited. Drawing upon his admiration for Cezanne, Leger, Picasso, and Seurat, Davis developed a style that would evolve over the next four decades to become a dominant force in postwar art. His visionary responses to modern life and culture both high and low remain relevant more than 50 years after his death. Focusing on the images and motifs that became hallmarks of his career, this book features approximately 100 works-from his paintings of tobacco packages of the early 1920s, the abstract Egg Beater series, and the WPA murals of the 1930s, to the majestic works of his last two decades. The authors take a critical approach to the development of Davis's art and theory, paying special attention to the impact his earlier work had upon his later masterpieces. They also discuss Davis's unique ability to assimilate the lessons of Cubism as well as the imagery of popular culture, the aesthetics of advertising, and the sounds and rhythms of jazz-his great musical passion. Informed by previously unpublished primary documents, the detailed chronology is, in effect, the first Davis biography. Together, these elements create a vital portrait of an artist whose works hum with intelligence and energy.
