The Enchanted Loom: Chapters in the History of Neuroscienceby: Corsi, Pietro (ed)

The Enchanted Loom: Chapters in the History of Neuroscience
by: Corsi, Pietro (ed)

Hardcover. NY, Oxford University Press, 1st, 1991, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, pages, profusely illustrated in color and b/w. Written by an international team of scientists, The Enchanted Loom offers a sweeping look at the history of neuroscience from the philosophy of Aristotle to the advent of Artificial Intelligence. This collection of accessible, intriguing essays is supplemented by over 350 spectacular illustrations, many in color, with thorough and informative captions written by the scientists themselves. The authors discuss Descartes's contributions to thought about the brain, alongside brilliant artistic studies of the central nervous system that he and masters like da Vinci executed. They show how phrenology--the long discredited study of skull shape and mental faculties--actually represented a breakthrough in thinking about localized brain functions, and how the advent of the microscope and other equipment led to new discoveries. The contributors bring the story up to the present day, unfolding the emergence of the modern neurosciences, advances in molecular biology, and the debate over how infants learn language. In addition, the book offers a short history of computers and recent thought about whether the mind works like computer software. Noted contributors include; Larry Squire, writing on memory; Solomon Snyder, discussing psychopharmacology; and John Dowling on vision. Colorful, intelligent, informative, The Enchanted Loom offers an authoritative and enjoyable look at the history of a complex and fascinating science.

The End of Innocence: Photographs from the Decades That Defined Pop : The 1950s to the 1970sby: Liz Jobey (Editor)

The End of Innocence: Photographs from the Decades That Defined Pop : The 1950s to the 1970s
by: Liz Jobey (Editor)

Hardcover. Zurich, Scalo/DAP, 1st, 1997, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 267 pages. Liz Jobey's brief but illuminating introduction brings cohesion to thie fab book of photos of EMI pop and rock musicians of the late 1950's and the 1960's. It's EMI, and only EMI, but considering the artists who once signed with this British label, including the Beatles, Little Richard, David Bowie, Jeff Beck Group, Rod Stewart, Pretty Things, Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf, (Sir) Cliff Richards, Three Dog Night, Chubbie Checkers, Spencer Davis Group, the Yardbirds--EMI's talent pool was as rich as any label. The most only obvious omissions among the Brits (i.e., EMI never signed them) would probably be the Stones, the Who, and the Kinks. The photographs are enjoyable as kitsch, as a window into period fashion and sensibilities, and, occasionally, as great photography.

The Europeans: Three Lives and the Making of a Cosmopolitan Cultureby: Orlando Figes

The Europeans: Three Lives and the Making of a Cosmopolitan Culture
by: Orlando Figes

Softcover. London, Penguin Books , reprint, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Softcover, 553 pages. The Europeans is richly enthralling, panoramic cultural history of nineteenth-century Europe, told through the intertwined lives of three remarkable people: a great singer, Pauline Viardot, a great writer, Ivan Turgenev, and a great connoisseur, Pauline's husband Louis. Their passionate, ambitious lives were bound up with an astonishing array of writers, composers and painters all trying to make their way through the exciting, prosperous and genuinely pan-European culture that came about as a result of huge economic and technological change. This culture - through trains, telegraphs and printing - allowed artists of all kinds to exchange ideas and make a living, shuttling back and forth across the whole continent from the British Isles to Imperial Russia, as they exploited a new cosmopolitan age. The Exodus Pattern in the Bibleby: David Daube

The Exodus Pattern in the Bible
by: David Daube

Hardcover. London, Faber & Faber, 1st, 1963, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 94 pages. David Daube was a scholar of Roman and Jewish law, and his expertise led him to some unique scriptural insights. In this stimulating monograph, Daube argues that the Bible presents the exodus as a judicial proceeding, with Egypt coming under God's judgment for its treatment of the Israelite slaves. He shows that this judicial model explains some unusual details of the narrative. For example, Moses' negotiations with Pharaoh and the fact that Israelite women were given jewelry before their departure are part of implementing the proper procedures for releasing slaves as outlined in Deut 15:13. Daube also brings out parallels in the biblical accounts of Israel's release from Egypt, Jacob's departure from Laban in Gen 31, and the release of the captured ark of the covenant by the Philistines in I Sam 6. Name on front fly leaf, light pencil notations to several pages.

The Face of Home: A New Way to Look at the Outside of Your House by: Eck, Jeremiah

The Face of Home: A New Way to Look at the Outside of Your House
by: Eck, Jeremiah

Hardcover. Newtown CT, Taunton , 1st, 2006, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 218 pages in color. There are hundreds of books on the market about designing the interior of a home, but none for homeowners that focuses on the design of a home's exterior. And yet the exterior of the house is what we all see and remember- it's the "face" of home we fall in love with, whether we are looking for a new home or just taking in the sights during a Sunday afternoon drive. All of us can relate to a house's exterior, but few understand how they're put together, or how the outside and inside should work in harmony. When people describe the exterior of a house, they usually give a label or a style- Cape, Colonial, Ranch. But, in truth, what they are referring to are not only its exterior physical characteristic- the particular blend of roof-lines, siding, trim, windows, doors and porches, but also its emotional characteristics- inviting, austere, friendly. The author examines these physical and emotional characteristics, explores the concepts and applications of exterior design and how they can be successfully used to enhance the experience of home and provides a fresh, new language for describing, understanding, and shaping the face of home. The Fantastic Chronicle of Movie Posters (Movie Poster Masterpieces)by: Dave Golder (Author), Derek Johnson (Foreword)

The Fantastic Chronicle of Movie Posters (Movie Poster Masterpieces)
by: Dave Golder (Author), Derek Johnson (Foreword)

Hardcover. Flame Tree Publishing, 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 128 pages. From classic Star Wars, Blade Runner and Matrix all the way back to The Day the Earth Stood Still sf movie posters have lurked and flickered across our subways, streets and bedroom walls since the early 1950s. From the kitsch of the Attack of the 50ft Woman, through to the many versions of Time Machine or War of the Worlds the 1980s hailed a more sophisticated filmic appeal for our sf dollar, with the onset of green screen and cgi. The films may change, but somehow the posters remain the same: geeky, powerful, escapist fantasy, and we love them all! The book features an arguable, quirky selection of what we think are the best.

The Farmer's Daughterby: Jim Harrison

The Farmer's Daughter
by: Jim Harrison

Hardcover. NY, Grove Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. The three stories in The Farmer's Daughter display a writer whose gift is in full flower. The title novella is the uncompromising, heartbreaking tale of Sarah, a home-schooled fifteen-year old girl recently transplanted by her somewhat oblivious parents to rural Montana, who is learning that the world is larger than her fundamentalist mother wants her to know. In the rapture of playing music, riding her horse, and enjoying the natural world, Sarah searches for clues to understand her own coming of age. But when her mother runs off with another man, the girl is left to deal with an act of unexpected brutality that will test her faith in the world she is starting to embrace. In Brown Dog Redux, Harrison shifts to the lighter side. The beloved recurring character Brown Dog is killing time in Toronto where he's fled to save his adopted daughter, Berry, from being locked in an institution. But Toronto has run out of welcome and BD, still looking for love, enlists the help of an unexpected benefactor to sneak Berry back into the States on the tour bus of an Indian rock band called Thunderskins, with riotously funny results. Harrison's final tale, Games of Night, is the witty, ribald, and occasionally harrowing memoir of a retired werewolf in contemporary times. Misdiagnosed with a rare blood disorder brought on by the bite of a Mexican hummingbird, he attempts to lead a normal life, but is nevertheless plagued by hazy, feverish episodes of epic lust, physical appetite, athletic exertions, and outbursts of violence under the full moon. The Farming of Bones (SIGNED COPY)by: Edwidge Danticat

The Farming of Bones (SIGNED COPY)
by: Edwidge Danticat

Hardcover. NY, Soho Press, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. SIGNED BY AUTHOR on title page. In a 1930s Dominican Republic village, the scream of a woman in labor rings out like the shot heard around Hispaniola. Every detail of the birth scene--the balance of power between the middle-aged Senora and her Haitian maid, the babies' skin color, not to mention which child is to survive--reverberates throughout Edwidge Danticat's Farming of Bones. In fact, rather than a celebration of fecundity, the unexpected double delivery gels into a metaphor for the military-sponsored mass murder of Haitian emigrants. As the Senora's doctor explains: "Many of us start out as twins in the belly and do away with the other." But Danticat's powerful second novel is far from a currently modish victimization saga, and can hold its own with such modern classics as One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Color Purple. Danticat writes one of the most lovely portrayals of the dynamics between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, which share an island and have engaged in conflict since before the independence of Haiti. The author is able to paint a picture that does not seem to me to take sides, but simply states the reality of what happened through the fictional lives of the characters. I am interested in the way that the relationships between the Haitians and Dominicans are not always strained, and sometimes are extremely close, but those relationships are challenged in the middle of the political strains.

The Figurative Pollockby: Josef Helfenstein , Nina Zimmer, et al.

The Figurative Pollock
by: Josef Helfenstein , Nina Zimmer, et al.

Hardcover. NY, Prestel, 1st, 2016, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, gray cloth with yellow band, 248 pages. This beautiful book focuses on the distinctive and expressive power of Jackson Pollock's figurative paintings, drawings, and prints; a rarely studied aspect of his artistic career. Jackson Pollock's name has become synonymous with the abstract drip paintings that he famously created on the floor of his studio. Before these paintings, from the 1930s to the late 1940s, Pollock created figurative works, studying at one time under the painter Thomas Hart Benton and with the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Pollock took up figuration again after his famous drip paintings. This book starts with the early decades and also treats Pollock's re-adoption of the figuration after his renowned abstract paintings. The Figurative Pollock features 100 paintings and works on paper. From rolling landscapes to experiments in non-Western totemic painting to sketches and drawings fueled by Jungian analysis, the enormous range of Pollock's early and late work is presented here. Brimming with confidence and a sense of freedom, distinct yet so easily related to Pollock's most famous oeuvre, these works contribute to an understanding of how the artist found his voice.

The First World War: Unseen Glass Plate Photographs of the Western Front by Carl De Keyzerby: Carl De Keyzer/David Van Reybrouck

The First World War: Unseen Glass Plate Photographs of the Western Front by Carl De Keyzer
by: Carl De Keyzer/David Van Reybrouck

Hardcover. Chicago, University of Chicago Press , 1st, 2015, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 280 pages. Preface by Geoff Dyer. Essay by David Van Reybrouck. Includes 20 color plates and 80 halftones. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap. The First World War presents a startlingly different perspective, one based on rare glass plate photographs, that reveals the war with previously unseen, even uncanny, clarity. Scanned from the original plates, with scratches and other flaws expertly removed, these oversized reproductions offer a wealth of unusual moments, including scenes of men in training, pictures of African colonial troops on the Western front, landscapes of astonishing destruction, and postmortem portraits of Belgian soldiers killed in action. Readers previously familiar with only black-and-white or sepia-toned prints of the hostilities will be riveted by the book's many authentic color photographs, products of the early autochrome method. From children playing war games to a wrenching deathbed visit, these images are extraordinary not only for their subject matter, but also for the wide range of emotions they evoke.

The Friendby: Sarah Stewart/David Small

The Friend
by: Sarah Stewart/David Small

Hardcover. NY, Farrar, Straus and Giroux , 1st, 2004, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 48 pages illustrated in color by David Small. Annabelle Bernadette Clementine Dodd, Belle for short, is the child of wealthy parents who have no time for her. Even before the story begins, readers see her climbing down the stairs to kiss them good-bye, her father glancing at his watch all the while. But Belle has Beatrice Smith, a kindly housekeeper with whom she spends her days sharing Bea's chores (creating more havoc than help). While they have specific chores each day of the week, they always make time for delightful excursions to the beach. Then one day, Belle decides that she can go alone, with nearly disastrous results. The rhyming text describes the loving relationship between Bea and Belle, and the woman's infinite patience with her young charge. Small's cartoon watercolor-and-crayon illustrations, most of them spreads, depict a mansion on a hill overlooking the sea, Belle's grand bedroom, ornate parlors, and a time when wringer washing machines, clotheslines, and electric fans were the last word in luxury. The pictures of Bea hugging the little girl to her breast after nearly losing her, the woman's grief at what might have happened, and Belle's efforts to cheer her up are especially poignant.

The Frozen River: Seeking Silence in the Himalayaby: Crowden, James

The Frozen River: Seeking Silence in the Himalaya
by: Crowden, James

Hardcover. London, William Collins, 1st, 2020, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, 342 pages, color photos. In 1976 James Crowden left his career in the British army and travelled to Ladakh in the Northern Himalaya, one of the most remote parts of the world. The Frozen River is his extraordinary account of the time he spent there, living alongside the Zangskari people, before the arrival of roads and mass tourism. James immerses himself in the Zangskari way of life, where meditation and week-long mountain festivals go hand in hand, and silence and solitude are the hallmarks of existence. When butter traders invite James on their journey down the frozen river Leh, he soon realises that this way of living, unchanged for centuries, comes with a very human cost. In lyrical prose, James captures a crucial moment in time for this Himalayan community. A moment in which their Buddhist practices and traditions are in flux, and the economic pull of a world beyond their valley is increasingly difficult to ignore.
