by: Hans Helmut Prinzler

Hardcover. NY, Thames & Hudson, 1st, 2013, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket, still in publisher's shrink wrap. Celebrates the height of Weimar cinema through images and commentaries on more than seventy of its finest films Between the First and Second World Wars, Germany under the Weimar Republic was the scene of one of the most creative periods in film history. Through the silent era to the early years of sound, the visual flair and technical innovation of its filmmakers set an international standard for the powerful possibilities of cinema as an art form, with movies such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, and M building a legacy that shaped the world of film. Here is a showcase of more than seventy films, selected to give a wide-ranging overview of Weimar cinema at its finest. Every genre is represented, from escapist comedies and musicals to gritty depictions of contemporary city life, from period dramas to fantastical visions of the future, with themes such as sexuality and social issues tackled by iconic stars like Marlene Dietrich and Louise Brooks. A wealth of film stills captures the bold vision of great directors like Fritz Lang and Ernst Lubitsch, while the text sets the historical scene and gives intriguing insights into what the films meant to the society that created them.

Six Months in 1945: FDR, Stalin, Churchill, and Truman--from World War to Cold Warby: Michael Dobbs

Six Months in 1945: FDR, Stalin, Churchill, and Truman--from World War to Cold War
by: Michael Dobbs

Hardcover. NY, Knopf, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. 418 pages, b&w illustrations. From the author of the best-selling One Minute to Midnight, a riveting account of the pivotal six-month period spanning the end of World War II, the dawn of the nuclear age, and the beginning of the Cold War. When Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill met in Yalta in February 1945, Hitler's armies were on the run and victory was imminent. The Big Three wanted to draft a blueprint for a lasting peace--but instead set the stage for a forty-four-year division of Europe into Soviet and western spheres of influence. After fighting side by side for nearly four years, their political alliance was rapidly fracturing. By the time the leaders met again in Potsdam in July 1945, Russians and Americans were squabbling over the future of Germany and Churchill was warning about an "iron curtain" being drawn down over the Continent. These six months witnessed some of the most dramatic moments of the twentieth century: the cataclysmic battle for Berlin, the death of Franklin Roosevelt, the discovery of the Nazi concentration camps, Churchill's electoral defeat, and the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan. While their armies linked up in the heart of Europe, the political leaders maneuvered for leverage: Stalin using his nation's wartime sacrifices to claim spoils, Churchill doing his best to halt Britain's waning influence, FDR trying to charm Stalin, Truman determined to stand up to an increasingly assertive Soviet superpower.

Sixty Years a Hunterby: Bill Quimby

Sixty Years a Hunter
by: Bill Quimby

Hardcover. Long Beach CA, Safari Press, 1st, 2010, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright dust jacket. 336 pages, color and b/w photographs, b/w sketches by the author. Brown boards, spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. As the longtime editor of Safari magazine, Quimby had the chance to hunt on multiple continents for all the sundry game animals found there. In this book he tells us of hunts across North and South America; South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and other parts of Africa; Spain; Mongolia; and New Zealand. Also included is Quimby's successful quest to become one of the very few to take all ten of Arizona's big-game species. Several of his hunts were memorable for what went wrong. A horse panicked and fell off a series of ledges during a hunt for a mountain lion, which led to Quimby and a friend spending a cold New Year's Eve on a ridge without shelter or fire. Then, after he had waited thirty-nine years to draw an Arizona desert sheep tag, Bill is changing a tire on the first day of hunting when a bumper jack slips and breaks his arm. (He shot his ram and completed his "Big Ten" quest twelve days later by firing his rifle one-handed.) Some other stories include the time an Indian guide fell from a boat in the Northwest Territories and drowned on the author's caribou hunt; the time a storm on a Yukon moose hunt kept Quimby and his guide snowbound in a plywood shack for nine days. Still in publisher's shrinkwrap.

Skippy Volume 1: Complete Dailies 1925-1927
by: Crosby, Percy

Hardcover. US, IDW Publishing, 1st, 2012, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, 328 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Skippy debuted as a daily newspaper strip in 1925, and as a Sunday the following year, soon becoming a sensation, published in 28 countries and 14 languages. Crosby continued writing and drawing the feature until 1945. "Percy Crosby caught lightning in a bottle and learned how to draw with it," wrote Jules Feiffer in a 1978 appreciation. Milton Caniff marveled, "Boy, there's nothing faster than watching Skippy run the way Crosby drew him." Crosby was heralded as "the greatest apostle of motion in the field of art" by Edward Alden Jewell, art critic of the New York Times. His artwork has hung in the Louvre in Paris, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, and the Tate Gallery in London, among other venues, but it's his work as a cartoonist, as the creator of Skippy--the philosopher man-child--for which he's best known. Volume 1 includes every Skippy daily strip from the beginning--June 22, 1925 through the end of 1927--as well as the start of an extensive, ongoing biography of Percy Crosby by Jared Gardner, complemented by many photographs and rare artwork from the collection of the cartoonist's daughter, Joan Crosby Tibbetts.

Hardcover. US, Farameh, 1st, 2011, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: None, 496 pages. Like new in publisher's shrink-wrap. Slipcased. "SKULL STYLE is a beautifully designed book presents not only one of the most ancient symbols used in the history of mankind but how it is utilized in the most surprising and modern way today. Formerly an emblem of evil and mortality, the skull has been transformed into an avant-garde design element used in the most cutting-edge art, chic interiors and vanguard style of the moment. Whether embellished on costly T-shirts, woven on limited edition chairs, and even encrusted with diamonds sold at an art auction for $100 million, the skull is no longer just a daunting memento of our frail mortality but a contemporary figure of fashion. This 500-page book shows how this once morbid trinket of death has been reinvented into the much-desired decoration by the trendsetters of tomorrow. Glow-in-the dark cover art designed by Lucien Pellat-Finet."

Hardcover. Urbana IL, University of Illinois Press, 1st, 1964, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Good, Hardcover in a dust jacket with two small holes to front cover, 227 pages with index. "Slavery was a social and an economic institution of such power that it sustained and extended an economic system whose demands went far to determine the domestic and foreign policy of the "agrarian" party in our early history. For the agrarian politics of Jefferson, while possibly benefiting the small freeholder, very closely served the interests of the plantation system, at least as the planters conceived their interests." Slavery in the United States: A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Charles Ball, a Black Man, Who Lived Forty Years in Maryland, South Carolina and Georgia, as a Slave Under Various Masters, and was One Year in the Navy with Com

Hardcover. New York, John S. Taylor, 2nd pr., 1837, Book: Good, Dust Jacket: None, Hardcover, leather bound with gilt design on front and rear covers, spine also with gilt design with the title Cabinet of Freedom (the series under which the publisher issued this narrative). 517 pages with an extra illustrated title page dated 1836, the regular title page dated 1837. All edges gilt. First published by John Shugert in Lewistown PA a year earlier. Written with the help of Isaac Fisher, a white Philadelphia lawyer, who declares in his preface that he has edited the oral narrative Ball had dictated to him to omit any beliefs or feelings Ball may have expressed about slavery. This declaration of significant editing has led scholars to debate the authenticity of Ball's narrative, but most agree that it represents a true story. Ball describes his experiences as a slave, including the uncertainty of slave life and the ways in which the slaves are forced to suffer harsh and inhumane conditions. In particular, he recounts the qualities of his various masters, and the ways in which his fortune depended on their temperament. The leather has separated from the spine of the book but appears to be very repairable. The first 3 pages loose (a blank leaf and the two title pages), there is a light stain to the illustrated one and light foxing. The interior of the book is clean, tight with minimal foxing throughout.

Sleeping with Ghosts: A Life's Work in Photographyby: MCCULLIN, DON

Sleeping with Ghosts: A Life's Work in Photography
by: MCCULLIN, DON

Hardcover. New York , Aperture Book, 1st, 1996, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 207 pages, illustrated throughout in b&w. Light yellowing to edges and light shelf-wear to dust jacket, else a clean, tight copy. This book shows the life's work of one of the most brilliant photojournalists of our time, who raised the status of his craft to that of high art. In his bestselling autobiography, Unreasonable Behavior, Don McCullin told the extraordinary and sometimes harrowing story of how he grew up in north London's gangland and graduated from poverty to stardom as the most daring and self-sacrificing reporter of wars around the world - from Cyprus to Israel, the Congo and Biafra to Vietnam, Pakistan to Cambodia, Beirut to Iraq. But his interests go far beyond the battleground in all its degradation which he has captured so brilliantly. In this book he has collected some 200 of what he considers to be his best pictures. A few have become well-known icons, many have not been seen in a book before. They depict unemployed miners collecting coal from the beach at dawn, down-and-outs in the East End, the homeless in Bradford, but they also reveal a passion for landscape, especially in the mysterious light of India, and a moving contact between human beings in a harsh environment. Slick: My Life in and Around Baseball
by: Whitey Ford/ Phil Pepe

Hardcover. NY, William Morrow, 2nd pr., 1987, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket, 256 pages, b&w illustrations. Hall of Famer Ford was the Yankee pitching ace in the 1950s and early 1960s, when the team frequently won the pennant. Raised in Queens, he was a quintessential New Yorker, and his well-publicized friendship with country boy Mickey Mantle made him seem the archetypal city slicker. Here he and New York Daily News columnist Pepe cover his diamond career, which was pretty much an uninterrupted triumph. Ford's lifetime winning percentage was .690, he played in 11 World Series and set the record for most consecutive scoreless innings in the series. There are also tales of his epoch-making carousing with Mantle and Billy Martin, his doctoring of baseballs and the greats he has known. Additionally, there is a warm introduction by pal Mantle. Clean copy.

Slim Aarons: Once Upon A Timeby: Aarons, Slim

Slim Aarons: Once Upon A Time
by: Aarons, Slim

Hardcover. NY, Abrams, 1st, 2003, Book: Very Good, Dust Jacket: Very Good, Hardcover, 240 pages. Aarons, erstwhile photographer to the rich and famous, has combed his archives to compile a collection of slick, upscale snapshots that vividly capture the lives of the "polo set." After the violence he witnessed as a combat photographer in WWII, Aarons decided that the only beaches he wanted to invade in the future were "decorated with beautiful girls tanning in a tranquil sun"-which are amply presented here. Aarons imparts a nearly tactile quality to these razor-sharp images, and every photograph, from the 1950s through the 1980s, is richly evocative of its era. One 1955 photo captures longtime fashion icon C.Z. Guest poolside in typically modest mid-century swimming attire with her son and dogs. A 1964 spread for Town & Country pictures the deeply tanned "young matrons of Palm Beach" in day-glow floral Lilly Pulitzer dresses. In a 1968 picture, fellow photographer Lord Lichfield is shown on the Italian Riviera wearing groovy yellow pants and flanked by Pucci-clad Italian princesses. Aaron's caption notes that "a photographer's life without a wife" seems to agree with the young cousin to Queen Elizabeth. While much of Aarons' work is focused on "horsey" types, he also turns his lens on creative folks. A dashing Gore Vidal is pictured at his Italian villa, the late Gianni Versace is shown at work in his home on Lake Como and Wanda Horowitz, daughter of Arturo Toscanini, is photographed at her father's podium at La Scala opera house in Milan. Aarons' gossipy captions, which accompany each photograph, help make this striking volume a voyeur's dream. 250 color photographs
